5.0 out of 5 stars Bold text carries you through all 4 gospels in 1 sweep
The gospel harmony is like having 4 witnesses to an event before you to each tell their part as the story is told. No more having to bounce from Matt. to John, to Luke, to Mark. Multiple colums containing each gospel relative to each chronological event. This harmony is special in that the author has bolded the unique text in each relative gospel so that you can read...

2.0 out of 5 stars I don't like the format
This isn't what I expected. I expected 4 columns, one for each gospel, with blank spaces where appropriate. Maybe this would've used more paper, but it sure would've been easier to navigate. With *very* close inspection I can see that there is a boldfaced narrative as promised, but it's not especially bold. It's hard to distinguish the boldface from the regular font. And...

5.0 out of 5 stars Bold text carries you through all 4 gospels in 1 sweep, October 15, 1999
This review is from: Harmony of the Four Gospels, A: The New International Version (Paperback)
The gospel harmony is like having 4 witnesses to an event before you to each tell their part as the story is told. No more having to bounce from Matt. to John, to Luke, to Mark. Multiple colums containing each gospel relative to each chronological event. This harmony is special in that the author has bolded the unique text in each relative gospel so that you can read all the gospels at the same time as one flowing story, not missing a bit of information. Hard to put down. You or whomever you buy it for will love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great tool for a study of the Gospels!, December 28, 2002

This review is from: Harmony of the Four Gospels, A: The New International Version (Paperback)
This is a wonderful tool when studying the Gospel's account of the life of Christ. The author (or should I say editor/compiler?) arranges the texts in harmony, but also includes approximate dates of when the events took place. Some are critical of this approach, wondering how Mr. Daniel came up with the method of dating the events. Mr. Daniel asserts that the method is by no means difinitive. However, by following the feasts and seasons mentioned in the Gospel texts, he does leave us with useful benchmarks as to when these events took place. There are also useful comments about events like the cleansing of the temple. Were there two such events or only one? Mr. Daniel begs the question, then gives his view in the footnotes. This is a great book to use in a long Bible study on the life of Christ - with the emphasis on long. Our care group is currently working our way through the book . . . it's taken us a year and a half, and we're just now half way through! Take your time . . . learn all you can about our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tremendous Resource, February 21, 2000

This volume provides excellent insight into the Gospel narratives. There are many versions of Gospel harmonies, but this is the only one that I am aware of that provides a continuous narrative of the main story line from one writer to the next. It is amazing how many details you pick up by reading a composite account using all four Gospels. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars You need this book, April 2, 2005
This review is from: Harmony of the Four Gospels, A: The New International Version (Paperback)
Think you know the Gospels? You don't know the Gospels at all until you read this book over and over and over.

Each event of all the four Gospels is printed side-by-side in columns with the continuity of the narratives printed in bold type so that the whole story comes alive, giving the complete narrative from beginning to end as it unfolds.

I have owned this book for over 12 years and I'm still rereading it all the time. It never gets old. It's great for devotionals, for study or for leisure reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Tool for Studying/Teaching the Life of Christ, March 19, 2001
This review is from: Harmony of the Four Gospels, A: The New International Version (Paperback)
This harmony follows the tradition (but some differing paragraph divisions) of Broadus' classic work. It is top notch for several reasons: (1) it uses the modern English NIV, (2) it provides a continuous story line courtesy of bold-face type; one may follow the bold type and not miss a jot or tittle of information reguarding the life of Jesus, and (3) it is well laid out: the paper is thick, very white, and the font of the text comfortable to the eye.

There are some other fine harmonies available, but if you can only get one, I would recommend this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Practical Addition to Any Scholar's Library, July 20, 2001

I used this book during our study of the book of Matthew. Since it is helpful to read the other gospels in order to maximize understanding, the format of this book was perfect. The gospels are printed side-by-side whenever they cover the same illustration so the scholar can make comparisons, achieve clarity, and notice key repetitions. One very useful aspect is that the book has a running story in which the scripture is highlighted, regardless of which gospel, so that the reader following the highlighted text can read the full story of the ministry of Jesus with the maximum amount of detail and with improved chronology.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent study book, August 26, 2009

I had an earlier version of this book, which I liked until I saw this version. The format is similar, but easier to track the differences and similarities between the Gospels. This book is good as a group study book, or can be used as a supplement for individual study. The earlier version had bold type to show the similarities; this version just has boxes to show the comparisons. An empty box says that Gospel book does not have that particular story. Likewise text within the boxes shows what text is the same and where it differs. It's a very good book that any Bible student should have in their personal library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely essential, June 3, 2007
This review is from: Harmony of the Four Gospels, A: The New International Version (Paperback)
I was looking for a harmony of the gospel accounts and this was recommended to me. What an AMAZING effort Daniel has put forth. I call it the "golden thread" but its more of a bold-font that connects and weaves the verses together. This interweaving is done very insightfully and is most noticeable when all 4 accounts tell the same story, but use different or enhanced definitions as in, for example, the transfiguration. Very respectable work. This has helped me and some of my friends SO much. A MUST HAVE TO ANY WHO ONLY COLLECT QUALITY CHRISTIAN LITERATURE!!!!

And I don't care for the little titles over the various subsections. Maybe a few footnotes or an appendix explaining where/why the gospels differ on various points or why Daniel placed chapters where he did, but all those titles and varying formats really interrupts the reading. It's not at all what I was hoping for, I'm afraid.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for Christians studying at secular schools, January 24, 2009
By
This review is from: Harmony of the Four Gospels, A: The New International Version (Paperback)
This book provides the parallel passages you need to easily compare the accounts related in the gospels and connects a single storyline from each gospel into one. In the first 5 minutes of reading I have already been enlightened on a SEEMING contradiction by seeing the accounts side by side. There is in fact no contradiction as I had originally thought. This book was written by a Bible scholar who graduated from a Southern Baptist seminary and who has served as a missionary. As opposed to some scholars who constantly try to point out contradictions, he believes the Bible and offers suggestions for resolving what some might see as contradictions. The bolded storyline helped me to view the narratives in a different way from before. This book is a great help and will serve as a great resource as I take a course on the New Testament at a secular university.
