1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money. December 26, 2007
Format:Paperback
I eagerly anticipated getting this book (and its two companions) because my old Harmonies were falling apart. And my DH gifted me with them for Christmas.

What a MAJOR disappointment!!! It is disorganized and doesn't even have charts for some of the patterns. There are several pages of graph paper at the back, but what is one supposed to do, tear them out? This is unacceptable. The only positive thing is that the pictures are lovely.

The original Harmony Aran guide is a wonderful reference; it is organized first by number of stitches per cable then the panels are listed, again by number of stitches. It shows several examples of putting stitches together to make an Aran sweater. There are usually several patterns per page, which I like for comparison purposes. AND the stitch symbols are shown on every page.

Don't waste your money on this--get a copy of the original Harmony Aran guide.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't bother with it. December 28, 2007
Format:Paperback
I too eagerly anticipated this collection and asked for it for Christmas. I'm a fan of Interweave Press in general so I skipped my usual step of taking something out of the library first for a test drive. Boy am I sorry. Disorganized? Different versions of the same stitch are pages apart for no apparent reason. In fact there is no apparent reason for anything being on any particular page. Some of the swatches look as if they were knitted by beginners, the stitches look sloppy and unappealing. What I didn't like about the Vogue Stitchionary was the colors used for some of the swatches, I'd prefer black and white to chartreuse, just so it's neutral and I can more easily imagine it in other colors. I thought this was supposed to be neutral colors, but no, there's that darn chartreuse again. On the whole a wildly uninspiring collection of stitches.

What text there is, a brief introduction containing what little background information on Aran knitting is offered in the book and more general knitting information ("Yarn is the term used for strands of spun fiber which are twisted together into a continuous length of the required thickness." Are you kidding me?) is poorly written and condescending.

As a reference guide this book is all but useless due to it's poor organization, as stitch porn it's also pretty useless since the pages of beautiful stitches are interrupted by sloppy ugly ones, which just spoils the mood.

3.0 out of 5 stars Save your money and buy the Vogue Series December 18, 2007
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have the original Harmony guides and when I found they were going out of print, stocked up. I take the more narrow books to Kinkos and have them put a spiral binding so that they lay flat and are easier to use (spring for laminating the front and back cover to make them more durable as well).

When I saw that the new guides were out, I bought all three. However, I have to admit to being disappointed. They are very bland in colors -- some of the pictures don't look significantly better than straight black and white photos of Barbara Walker fame. While the size and format is more "portable", the photographs are not a significant upgrade from the original versions.

I think Harmony was trying to come out with an updated set of dictionaries to be more competitive to the Vogue guides. While on the surface, these may look more competitive, the Vogue guides are superior in terms of production value and selection of stitches.

You are better off looking for the original harmony guides which are significantly cheaper and investing in the Vogue guides if you want the pretty pictures.

I have all of the updated harmony guides. They are all fantastic to use when you want to tweak the look of a favorite pattern, or when you are developing your own patterns.
