Spot-on anthemic poilitical commentary. Not for tea baggers.,
By King Sapphire (Brooklyn, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Harmony Handgrenade (Audio CD)
Paul Megna's incisive follow-up to The Oxygen Ponies' introspectively personal first album has a much wider field of vision, this time taking aim at the sorry state of politics and demagoguery in the U.S. Although originally written and recorded during the Cheney era, it packs a punch for Tea-Bagger America. Harmony Handgrenade establishes Megna's staying power and prowess in an agitprop register, with vocal harmonies and political engagement recalling the ska-pop Brit bands of the early '80s, but in a wholly different, hard-hitting indie-folk musical genre. Devastatingly articulate turns of phrase and melodic progressions. Critically acclaimed and named to several top ten lists, but yet to find a substantial audience outside its local origins, despite tentative airplay on BBC2 in the UK. Highlights: Villains, Fevered Cyclone, War is Over, Love Yr Way.... A suite of brilliant pop anthems that will make you feel like a revolutionary, listens that might even do some good in the world. Much of this album is absolutely haunting and inspiring. The title says it all. Collectible for the cover recalling Andy Warhol's Velvet Underground banana.
From Villians: All you mystic gurus, liars, thieves and whores A plague upon your houses and on your holy wars I will lay my body down if the cause is true But everything you're fighting for does not move me to And oh, we got a long drive home... |
