Rather Dry But Thorough,
This review is from: Harold Arlen, Happy With the Blues (A Da Capo paperback) (Paperback)
This authorized biography is a rather dull and matter-of-fact, but very thorough account of Mr. Arlen's career to the date of publication, 1961. One of the greatest composers of the 20th century, Mr. Arlen wrote many songs that are standards and will be enjoyed, performed and re-recorded far into the future. Among his most well-known works are Stormy Weather, One For My Baby (And One More For The Road) and the soundtrack music for the immortal movie The Wizard Of Oz, which includes the superb song Over The Rainbow. Details of his working methods will make this book of interest to those wanting to learn more about the art and craft of songwriting. And his experiences composing music for films and Broadway shows give a valuable glimpse into the working realities of both Hollywood and Broadway in that time period.
