Harold Arlen in his greatest songs was with Irving Berlin, the Gershwins, Rodgers- Hart- Hammerstein, Cole Porter the very top of American popular song- writing. Like Al Jolson the son of a cantor he grew up in Buffalo, New York before going on to make a career in which he would collaborate with among others Johnny Mercer and Ira Gershwin.
For the musical film, the 'Wizard of Oz' he wrote the music for the song Yip Harburg later wrote the lyrics for, the song many believe the greatest American popular song of all time, 'Over the Rainbow'. This is a song which speaks to the dream and hope and youth of all of us. Arlen wrote many other great songs, the most well- known of which are included in this collection. This collection has some truly stellar perfomrances including those by jazz greats Miles Davis, and Art Tatum.
