5.0 out of 5 stars Surprise! It works!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed!
After reading the other two reviews we were excited about this product- and quickly ordered it. We have used it with many avacados- and made sure to use it properly. Unfortunately it did not work. The avacados still turned brown! We were very disappointed, and although it wasn't a very pricey item, we still feel badly about the purchase. Now it is down in the garage...

I have a rule that I do not buy any kitchen gadget which only has one use. I have so many one-use-only gadgets that I can barely close my kitchen drawers (and have donated lots of stuff to Goodwill as well).

When I saw this, I passed it by. But then I got to thinking. Several times I need only a half of an avocado and no matter what I do I can not get the other half to last for more than a few hours. I keep the pit in, brush the cut side with lime juice or lemon juice or Fruit Fresh, wrap tightly in plastic... to no avail. I went back and bought the Avo Saver, figuring that I will use it one time and if it doesn't work, I will return it.

Two days ago I cut an avocado in half, twisted it, and separated the halves. I used the half without the pit, then brushed some lemon juice on the other cut half. I placed it in the Avo Saver, tightened the little belt-thing, and put it in the refrigerator. Today I removed the avocado and was quite surprised to find that the cut side was still green-yellow and there was very little oxidation. It works!

I will return and edit if I find that this first time was a fluke and it actually doesn't work. But for now, it's a one-use gadget that I will definitely keep.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite kitchen utensil EVER!, July 22, 2010
This review is from: Harold Import Company Avo Saver (Kitchen)
My aunt got this for me because she knows how much I love avocados. To be honest, I didn't use it for awhile after she got it because I just forgot about it. However, I got it out some months ago and started using it. I often only use a half avocado in a salad or smoothie, etc. and have to store the other half. I've never found a good way to do this before. It always turned brown and icky and I would end up throwing it away. The Avo-Saver has stopped all that! Put the avo in pit side down, secure it with the strap and put it in the fridge. So easy and it really works! This item also washes nicely in the dishwasher. Love it! Highly recommended! If you like avocados, this item is a MUST HAVE!

4.0 out of 5 stars Saver Your Avo!, March 10, 2011
This review is from: Harold Import Company Avo Saver (Kitchen)
This is a great little gadget. I saw it in the grocery store and had to have it. The adjustable "strap" is rubbery, so you can pull it taut over just about any size avocado. The yellow part is super smooth and easy to clean. We buy organic, and they seem to not last as long, in general. They are also very yummy, so we haven't been using our AvoSaver as much, since we usually eat the whole avocado now. Mmmm....

Seriously, I'd move somewhere tropical just to have a plentiful supply of fresh avocado. And coconut.

Oh, and kudos to whomever took the original product photo on this page - looks so real, it looks fake!

PS - For the ESL readers, "Saver" is a play on words :)

I rely on reviews here at Amazon to help me make informed buying choices. I hope this review has helped you in the same manner. If you voted this as helpful, I Thank You! :)

4.0 out of 5 stars It actually works, January 13, 2010

July 31, 2011 update: I've had this thing for over a year and a half, and it's still in one piece. I wash it several times a week on the top shelf of the dishwasher and store it carefully in the utensil drawer, and it has held up. I've even given up using the sandwich bag; the second half of the avocado will keep up to three days, unless you start out with a superripe one.

This item currently sells for $3.95 plus qualifies for the super saver shipping and 4 for 3 features as well. I wasn't sure it would retard the browning of an avocado but felt adventurous because we routinely eat only half of one. So, I placed the half with the seed into the container and strapped it down. Because I really didn't think it would work, I also placed the entire thing, avocado and contraption, within a zip lock sandwich bag. Well, two days later, when I opened it, the avocado was only slightly brown and looked as if it had only been in the frig for two hours versus two days; I know what it would have looked like without the saver. I'm taking a star off because the device is made of thin plastic, and the strap is flimsy as well. I don't expect it to last very long unless I handle it carefully. It does go on the top shelf of the dishwasher and washes well.

January 24, 2012 update: Here we are two years later, and this utensil has held up like a champ. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it today, either in the strap breaking, or discoloration or cracking of the plastic, which are the things I thought would happen.

I like the taste of avocadoes and since they are also good for me I try to add them to meals. Half an avocado, calorie-wise, is perfect. So what to do with the other half? I have tried lemon/lime juice, keeping the pit with the avocado, saran wrap. You name it, I tried it. And sometimes they would work but mostly not. Not sure where I first saw this product but I found it on Amazon and thought why not? It is so basic a concept and a gadget (not even sure if it counts as gadget) but it really works.

Like the others, I, too, have to agree that this Avocado Saver works beautifully. It has held 1/2 an avocado for me for two days before turning brown. Two days is 48-hours. Compare that with the usual turning within 2-3 hours and you've got yourself an ingenius little device here.

Using a little lemon juice, I've saved an avocado for three days before it turned. You don't have to use fresh lemon juice either. If you've got the bottled kind, that works perfectly well too.

I'm so glad I found this thing. You will be too.

This little gizmo is great!!! I got one for myself and my sister a few years back at a grocery store and we are both still using it... on the odd occasion that an avocado makes it past being devoured the moment it is in the house. The adjustable band makes it great for any size avocado. Make sure to put the 1/2 that has the pit into the keeper. There is still a very slight amount of browning that happens, maybe less than 1/8", but it isn't the really nasty browning, just a light bit, and MUCH less than any other way of trying to keep one fresh.

Is this another kitchen widget to be used once and saved for the next garage sale? No, it is a great way to add more avocado and its many healthful properties to your diet. Avocados that are stored with the plastic gadget don't turn brown.
