4.0 out of 5 stars Delightful toy, just would've liked basic ingredients listed on the packaging.
I bought this as a gift for my five year old brother, and it was great. He loves craft-like activities, and he loves ice cream. I wasn't sure he would have the attention span to play with the ball for the necessary 20 minutes, but that wasn't a problem. He and his sister had no problem keeping the ball moving for that long. He was happy to share his ice cream with the...

2.0 out of 5 stars One time use
My son received this as a gift. We got to use it one time. It was fun, and we really enjoyed playing while we made ice cream, but it's impossible to take apart. After the ice cream froze the lid practically melded to the ball, so we couldn't dump the salt and ice part. I waited for it all to melt thinking perhaps the cold made it expand or constrict or something...and...

My son received this as a gift. We got to use it one time. It was fun, and we really enjoyed playing while we made ice cream, but it's impossible to take apart. After the ice cream froze the lid practically melded to the ball, so we couldn't dump the salt and ice part. I waited for it all to melt thinking perhaps the cold made it expand or constrict or something...and even when filled with room temperature salt water I still cannot get the lid off. I took out all the screws holding it together to try to take it apart to dump the water, and I still cannot pry the two halves of the ball apart to dump it. I saw a used ice cream ball in goodwill last week, apparently they had the same problem, though they managed to pry the ball apart, the rubber seal that held the pieces together was torn in several places. This is kinda expensive for a one time use novelty.

I wasn't sure he would have the attention span to play with the ball for the necessary 20 minutes, but that wasn't a problem. He and his sister had no problem keeping the ball moving for that long. He was happy to share his ice cream with the whole family. This is a great toy for active kids who like to make things.

The only drawback for me was that the ingredients needed to use this were listed inside the package and I didn't want to open it before he did. I found them elsewhere in order to have everything ready for him when he opened it, and I ended up getting the wrong kind of rock salt. So he had to wait a couple of days to use it.

Wasnt sure how this would turn out based on the reviews, but got it as a gift for my niece and nephew. They love playing with it, and they enjoy eating the ice cream - of course. But I was told it uses a lot of ice and takes a long time to make... Although the ice cream is soft, it tastes good. And is not too difficult to clean.

I purchased this for my boyfriend... one of the biggest soft-serve ice cream enthusiasts around. Here's the deal: this thing is pretty huge and relatively heavy. Keep in mind this is before you put any of the ingredients in it. The plastic is hard and webbed, so it doesn't exactly feel great when caught in your hands. It might work for some rugged-hand bearing campers, but not for us (pansy apartment dwellers).

I can't comment on how well it works/if the ice cream is any good because we returned it before using it.
