About the Artist

April Stace began playing harp at the age of seven in the Philadelphia area. She studied classical harp throughout her childhood, and in her teen years began to explore the world of jazz harp. While she was in college pursuing a degree in harp performance, she met Nucleo Vega, an accomplished drumset player whose practice studio was across the hall from hers. The two began a friendship, which led to the beginning of the experimental Harp 46 jazz trio, along with Nucleo's brother Posido on bass.

The trio began as a jazz ensemble performing in cafes and bookstores throughout the greater Washington D.C. area. Their signature sound evolved into a world and folk-flavored groove fusing the Celtic harp and Djembe with bass. Collectively and individually these three seasoned musicians have performed in some of America’s finest institutions and venues including the Smithsonian, Library of Congress, Disney World; DC Freedom Fest on the Mall, Takoma Park Jazz Fest, UDC Jazz Festival, RFK Stadium, Camden Yards, Baltimore Harbor; with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and Grammy award-winning Maryland Boys Choir.

Product Description

Harp 46 is an exciting contemporary instrumental trio emerging on the Seattle music scene. Comprised of Celtic harp, bass, and African Djembe drum, HARP 46 combines classical, jazz, folk and world influences in a novel contemporary instrumental sound. The harp’s pristine elegance is enhanced by world rhythms and unexpected timbres. Soft textures, gently laid lines and lingering space between notes lend a minimalist quality to the work. Quite simply, the music of HARP 46 is for the sophisticated listener. Inspired and innovative, the music fairly floats. HARP 46 produces music capable of transporting the listener on fine designs of discipline and improvisation classically-inspired, then tinged with worldly influence.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this CD & I loved hearing her in concert too!, July 12, 2008
This review is from: Harp 46 (Audio CD)
I saw April Stace live playing with percussion drums and a bass, the same who are probably featured on this CD. I love the interplay between the instruments. The harp is clearly the main instrument, but the bass comes in and out with delightful riffs and the drums keeps the music flowing.

My favorite is the first and the last pieces, Another Day and All Creatures. "Another day" has a couple of harp melody lines with a syncopation that just pleases my ear and soul. It's quite a delightful and a happy tune. The music seems to sing words itself.

The last piece, "All creatures" is a familar, favorite hymn that's very pleasing and lovely.

I can't saw I've been a fan of harp music. This Cd does not have the familiar long harp strums through octaves so often associated with harp music and certainly not missed on this Cd. GRATITUDE / KIM ROBERTSON: CELTIC HARP / VIRGINIA KRON: CELLO / MUSIC CASSETTE TAPE I rediscovered this CD this past week and have throughly enjoyed listening to it over and over again, especially when going to sleep.

If you like this type of music, you might also enjoy Gratitude by KIM ROBERTSON on CELTIC HARP & VIRGINIA KRON on CELLO, another unusual harp arrangement but with a cello. It's also very lovely and pleasing to hear. Unfortunately, Amazon only has it on Audio Cassette although I have the Cd.

5.0 out of 5 stars Harp music for people who don't listen to harp music, April 12, 2004

Ever tap your toe and/or dance while listening to harp music? Ever listen to harp music at all? This CD is like nothing else I have heard, and I don't listen to much "new age" stuff myself, so I can't compare it to anything. I just know it's not "breezy" like a lot of new age music--there's substance here that will make you dance. Harp and drums--who would have thought? If you want elevator music you can tune out or fall to sleep to, don't buy this CD. It will make you listen closely, and it will repay close attention.
