5.0 out of 5 stars FIVE Stars to the Nth Degree from a tough critic
Publisher Harper Collins really lives up to its name. I was so impressed with the carefully chosen picture books they compiled. There were so many children's books and I wanted to find the best ones for my child and I did with this book! There are 12 unabridged books in this book and the picture quality is EXCELLENT. The paper is glossy stock grade and the pictures...

3.0 out of 5 stars Quality of publishing
Re: Harper Collins Treasury of Picture Book Classics

No complaint about the choice of stories. I was just disappointed with the quality of the paper on which they are printed. My little three year old wants to just sit by himself, after we read, and look at the pictures. But, as gentle as he tries to be in turning the pages, they inevitably tear. Then he...

Publisher Harper Collins really lives up to its name. I was so impressed with the carefully chosen picture books they compiled. There were so many children's books and I wanted to find the best ones for my child and I did with this book! There are 12 unabridged books in this book and the picture quality is EXCELLENT. The paper is glossy stock grade and the pictures are just beautiful. Good Night Moon looks much better in this book compared to its individual board book and hardcover versions in this book. Baby Says is another picture book that is mainly a pictorial but was perfect for my infant who was able to comprehend the story. Her reactions were just amazing. There is another picture book out there called "The 20th Century Children's Book Treasury" and it does not compare. A good majority of the books in their book is abridged, the paper quality is like any other and, although the book is large in its dimensions, the pictures were shrunken down quite a bit because they put multiple pictures per page on some stories. In addition, some of their book choices were great but a lot of them weren't unlike Harper Collin's book. They really chose only the best. I only wish they came out with another volume. This book contains two books appropriate for infants, Goodnight Moon and Baby Says. The rest of the books will grow with the child.

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful collection of 12 picture book classics, November 27, 2002
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: HarperCollins Treasury of Picture Book Classics: A Child's First Collection (Hardcover)
This is a dictionary size collection of 12 picture book classics, including the good old "Goodnight Moon" first published in 1947. It is definitely a treasure worth a place in your child's library. As soon as your child graduates from board books, this is the book to give him. The royalties of this volumn goes to a noble cause; this makes the purchase so much more worthwhile.

This book is filled with many great stories. My child loves it. We have had it for a week and we read it 3 times a day. The size of the book is amazing, it is huge and the pictures are wonderful...

5.0 out of 5 stars Practically sells itself, April 11, 2008
This review is from: HarperCollins Treasury of Picture Book Classics: A Child's First Collection (Hardcover)
This is the kind of book that should sell itself -- a collection of classic children's stories. At a time when going to the children's section of any bookstore can be overwhelming, it's a relief to find something like the Harper Collins Treasury of Picture Book Classics. It takes away all the guesswork by being filled with over a dozen stories that are already tried and true, stories that are proven entertainment to a wide variety of children. And they're all in one book (though it's a heavy sucker, to say the least). The contents are as follows:

Goodnight Moon written by Margaret Wise Brown, illustrated by Clement Hurd
Caps for Sale by Esphyr Slobodkina
Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson
Crictor by Tomi Ungerer
A Baby Sister for Frances written by Russell Hoban, illustrated by Lillian Hoban
Leo the Late Bloomer written by Robert Kraus, illustrated by Jose Aruego
William's Doll written by Charlotte Zolotow, illustrated by William Pène Du Bois
If You Give a Mouse a Cookie written by Laura Joffe Numeroff, illustrated by Felicia Bond
George Shrinks by William Joyce
Baby Says by John Steptoe
From Head to Toe by Eric Carle
Pete's a Pizza by William Steig

In addition to these timeless stories, the Harper Collins Treasury of Picture Book Classics contains short author and illustrator biographies (such as what other books they've done) and useful ideas for sharing the story further with children (like concepts to discuss). And all proceeds from the purchase go to First Book, which donates books to needy families. It's a win-win situation, and not only for you and your children, but for others as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great big book, December 24, 2005
This review is from: HarperCollins Treasury of Picture Book Classics: A Child's First Collection (Hardcover)
This is one of my daughter's favorite books- definitely a great collection. Personally, I would have rather bought the books individually because this book is so big and heavy (almost 5 pounds!). It is really hard to read in our laps in our cozy chair because of the heft and size, but my daughter insists on reading it, so we move to the floor to read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book!, June 4, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: HarperCollins Treasury of Picture Book Classics: A Child's First Collection (Hardcover)
I bought this book for my 4-year-old granddaughter and within the first week we had read through it completely and at least half of it twice. It's a great compilation of top-notch classic picture books and in a quality presentation. It's a little too heavy for a child to cart around with him or her, but should be a favorite at story time. All the books inside are full sized with reprinted original illustrations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great collection at a great price, September 25, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: HarperCollins Treasury of Picture Book Classics: A Child's First Collection (Hardcover)
This is a great collection of classic stories all in one volume - at an unbeatable price. My two year old daughter loved acting out "Pete's A Pizza" as I read the story. We reach for this collection of stories a lot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Storybook collection everyone with children must own!, August 15, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: HarperCollins Treasury of Picture Book Classics: A Child's First Collection (Hardcover)
This is a terrific book in many ways! It has many colorful pictures, but, better yet, it has many of the stories you would want to have in your child's collection! We love it! Also, much easier than buying each individually!

My 18 mth old son and I fell in love with the book the moment it arrived. There is a wonderful range of stories with beautiful illustrations. This book includes every child's must-haves like - If You Give A Mouse A Cookie, Goodnight Moon, Harold and the Purple Crayon. Best of all I dont have to spend over [$$$]to get each of these books.

5.0 out of 5 stars 12 Timeless Classics in 1 Volume. Great Value!, March 24, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: HarperCollins Treasury of Picture Book Classics: A Child's First Collection (Hardcover)
I cannot say enough good things about this book in one review, quite simply because this book is actually a collection of twelve beautiful children's classics in one big volume. So, I should be writing twelve raving reviews instead of one!

You can search for each story using the Amazon search engine to find the corresponding entry for each story book, and you will realise that they are all great stories that we should be reading to our children. This volume simply puts them all in one place, at a great price!

When I first read this to my daughter, she could not get enough of it. After each story, she would turn to the front cover and point to the picture of another story and say, "I want that one!" This can go on for the entire night as she would keep saying, "I want another one!"

I guess the bad thing about such a volume is simply its size and weight. It is pretty heavy for a toddler. Also, my voice is a little hoarse right now from reading so many stories to my daughter last night.
