Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The HarperCollins maps are from the Bartholomew database, which is also used by the Times Books, Reader's Digest, and World Book atlases. This New World Atlas was published first in the U.K and released in the U.S. in 2003.

The introduction appears to set the tone, with small print that is very difficult to read. A section called "World" follows, with thematic maps of physical features, countries, land images, earthquakes and volcanoes, population, and more. The maps in many cases occupy a limited portion of the page, with a number of small photographs or charts and graphs filling the page. The major map section is by continent, beginning with Europe and ending with Oceans. Introductory material on the continents includes thematic maps, photographs, charts, and graphs similar to the section on the world. There are boxes for country information--flags, population, currency, etc. The print on maps is difficult to read, especially in high-density areas. The coverage of Asia is impressive, with 20 maps. "Connection" boxes accompany each map and refer the user to thematic information.

The index is the best part of the atlas, easy to read with dark print on pale green paper. It is consistent in size (80,000 place-names) with comparable atlases. This atlas would be appropriate for school, academic, and public libraries as a relatively current, supplemental resource in the medium size and price category.
