Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

"We dance in two worlds,/ inevitable as seasons in one,/ exotic curiosities in the other," says Onondaga poet Gail Tremblay, capturing the strength of these poets: their ability to meld a contemporary consciousness with ancient and enduring values and traditions. Continuing work begun in Carriers of the Dream Wheel (1975), poet/scholar Niatum assembles 36 North American Indian poets, Momaday, Welch, Ortiz, Young Bear, Harjo, and Erdrich among them. Each poet gets 3 to 10 poems and, in an appendix, a brief biography/bibliography. This doesn't seem quite enough; still, anthologies ought not to satisfy but whet the appetite, and this one does. Recommended. Rhoda Carroll, Vermont Coll., Montpelier

5.0 out of 5 stars These poems are the real thing . . ., April 16, 2000
This review is from: Harper's Anthology of Twentieth Century Native American Poetry (Paperback)
Whether you are Native American or not, I would highly recommend this book. These poems reverberate through the blood and the bone. This is my favorite anthology (and I have a pretty hefty personal poetry library). I go nowhere without it! These poems are real . . .

This review is from: Harper's Anthology of Twentieth Century Native American Poetry (Paperback)
One of the most essential anthologies of contemporary Native American writers. Its only limitation is time. Since its publication in the late 1980s, many important new poets and writers like Sherman Alexie and John Smelcer have surfaced. Nonetheless, requitred reading in any Native American lit. class!

5.0 out of 5 stars Harpers Anthology of 20th Century Native American Poetry, May 18, 2005
More than 100 poems being written today, Native American poetry is the poetry of historic witness. It comes out the past, which is the present. This book tells stories about people, animals and how they live. These poems are mostly about Navajos in different states like Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico

If you're a person that loves to read poetry than this is a book that will sweep you off your feet and into another world. The poems I liked the best was "If I love you", and "Bear: a totem dance as seen by raven." "If I love you" is about a person trying to tell someone if they really care and what they see inside. "Bear: A totem dance as seen by raven" is about a bear who dances like a man but slowly and in the night he could hear the raven cry. The bear dances with elders and children's. They were both awesome. It felt like I was in the poem when I was reading it.
