Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

One of the earliest successful American sculptors of the Neoclassic style, Hosmer was helped by several factors to gain access to the profession. "Hatty" was an exceptional, headstrong young woman who survived the death of her mother and her siblings. Her father was a physician, which facilitated her serious study of anatomy; her talent at modeling was enhanced by her study of the skills of Italian stonecutters; and she maintained the good offices of an influential patron. Sherwood gives serious feminist attention to Hosmer's career, but the tone buckles under its own weight. Though the volume does not adequately revitalize Hosmer's critical reputation, it is recommended as a good starting point.
