Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-8-- A concise, compelling biography. Tubman showed her fearlessness at an early age, according to Burns. At 15, she refused to help an overseer recover a runaway slave and was, in turn, hit in the head by a two-pound lead weight. The resulting injury caused her to suffer from ``sleeping fits'' for the rest of her life. Her escape to the North, her trips back to the South to aid the escape of slaves to freedom, and her considerable contributions as nurse and spy during the Civil War are included in this readable narrative. The author supplements the facts about Tubman's life with material relevant to the time period. Black-and-white photographs, paintings, and drawings are well captioned. Students who are often intimidated by biographies, especially when they must cull research facts from the narrative, will find this treatment readable and the information accessible. Because of the popularity of Tubman and her role in the Underground Railroad, there is usually room for another biography about her on the shelf. This one is a good choice. --Sylvia V.
