This review is from: Harriet Tubman (Kindle Edition)
This is one of our most favorite books that we have used for our read aloud time during daily homeschool lessons. This book should be read from cover to cover. The overall message is powerful as it reveal the depravity of those who lived as so called Christians while disobeying the very Bible they claimed to believe. Harriet suffered greatly at the hands of hateful white slave owners. This book will stir receptive and sensitive hearts. You will laugh and cry. It is a story that is able to bring both change and appreciaion of slaves and freedom. The Quakers were mightily used of God to assist slaves in their pursuit of a new life. Reconcilition goes along way when given in sinceriy. This book is comfortable to read aloud. We also made a lapbook when we finished the story to honor the life of Harriet Tubman.

This review is from: Harriet Tubman: Freedom's Trailblazer (Childhood of Famous Americans) (Paperback)
This book was recommended for my child's 3rd grade curriculum, and I will admit that I did not read the entire book; so I was hesitant to post a review. Seeing that there are no other reviews, however, I decided to post one regardless. I do think that other Christians out there who are using this for their curriculum would want to know that this book very negatively portrays Christians. It purposely points out in one sentence that the white woman was nasty and abusive... and then Harriet comments in the next sentence that "she must be a very good Christian" because she has lots of Bibles in her library. I read about 3 of these exact types of stabs at Christianity before I got fed up with the book and put it down. To be fair, it does have other Christian portrayals in the story (such as within the church Harriet attends) that are fine... but the negative ones they have there are most definitely NOT neutral, but extremely pointed and undermining towards Christianity.
Hopefully someone who has read the entire book will eventually post a thorough review of the book... but for the time being I hope that this helps other homeschoolers or parents make a decision in regards to purchasing the book. |
