Do GRAPHIC BOOKS qualify for school "book reports" ? !, April 17, 2006
Classic comics have 'been around' for years but libraries now have AREAS devoted to the books, with the more sophisticated name "GRAPHICS" - - and largely in hard covers. If you haven't read any of the graphic novels, this would be a good one to choose as a starter.
"Harriet Tubman & the Underground Railroad" is aimed at 4th to 6th graders. While the "cartoon artists" are doubtless the focus of most readers' attention there is a great deal of history packed into this 2005 book. It is based on sound research, with some quotes from primary sources shown against a cream-colored background to differentiate from fictionalization.
A source for more information on the web is given, although many readers in the middle grades will be quite accustomed to using search engines & discover even more that way.
Harriet Tubman (baptised Araminta Ross) was a courageous, driven woman. She worked for many decades to lead other slaves to freedom, and then worked for women's rights. It is good if graphic art can inspire more students (including some 'reluctant readers') to study & appreciate Harriet Tubman as an authentic heroine of American history. Reviewer mcHAIKU applauds her as one who could honestly make the claim: "On my Underground Railroad, I never ran my train off the track and I never lost a passenger." She was probably in her early 90's when she died in her Auburn, NY, home. The house is now a memorial to her life of sacrifice and dedication. Reading about Harriet Tubman in ANY form is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !

This review is from: Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad (Graphic History) (Paperback)
Great text for young readers who cannot seem to concentrate and for language learners. The illustrations are colorful and the language is simple and to the point.

Harriet Tubman Graphically, February 19, 2008
This review is from: Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad (Graphic History) (Paperback)
This is a graphic history of Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad. It is not a poetic as some picture books on depicting the story but very good at telling it matter of factly. I work with students learning English so these books are very helpful to me.
