This review is from: Harris, Gould, Moore, Effinger (Audio CD)
I purchased this CD for the Moore, having listened to my father's old LP of the Symphony in A recorded sometime in the 40's or 50's by Dean Dixon. The performance did not disappoint, but the real revelation was the Effinger - an extremely delightful and compact work which is harmonically reminiscent of the early works of David Diamond. The Cowboy Rhapsody by Morton Gould is stylistically similar to Copland's Billy the Kid and Rodeo, and uses some of the same tunes - rather lightweight but still enjoyable. The Harris is the weightiest piece on the disc and is not as accessible as his better-known 3rd symphony, but is still worth listening to. The performances are excellent and the sound quality is warm, spacious and clean. Ian Hobson has directed the chamber orchestra at the University of Illinois for a considerable time, as conducted and concertized worldwide and does a great job musically here - I hope he will continue unearthing works of this type which deserve to be heard more frequently.
