1.0 out of 5 stars Still Egregiously Inaccurate on ME
Editor Fauci includes van der Meer and Bleijenberg's egregiously inaccurate chapter on Myalgic Encephalomyelits ("Chronic Fatigue Syndrome"). It is no better than that in earlier editions by Fauci colleague Straus.

The article paints ME as having proven psychological components and relatively unproven organic components. Nothing could be further from the...

5.0 out of 5 stars E-Book Support - iPad, Nook, More, December 17, 2011
This review is from: Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine: Volumes 1 and 2, 18th Edition (Hardcover)
Harrison's is a great line of books, and now they have partnered with other companies to provide robust ebook data. Here is information on it

"For readers who wish to continue using Harrison's in a single volume format, we are pleased to offer two new eBook versions of the 18th edition: a traditional eBook, with text and illustrations from the new edition included for reading on a portable e-reader or on a desktop, and an enhanced eBook developed especially for new tablet devices (e.g., iPad, Galaxy, Playbook, Nook) that offer high-definition resolution of multimedia content and interactive features. The Harrison's 18th edition enhanced eBook will contain extensive embedded video footage, including all of the new clinical procedural videos; the wonderful neurologic examination videos from Samuels and Lowenstein; examples of cardiovascular imaging and assessment; and high-resolution versions of more than 2000 color images from the book and the Harrison's atlases on the companion DVD. Along with other social media features, the enhanced eBook offers users the opportunity to take and share notes from lectures and their own reading. Additional resources include Harrison's Online, a continuously updated electronic resource that highlights and summarizes newly published articles on significant medical findings and advances. Harrison's Self-Assessment and Board Review, a useful study guide for board review based on information in the 18th edition, will soon be produced. Harrison's Manual of Medicine, a pocket version of Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine, is available in both print and electronic formats. "

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it!, August 9, 2011

This review is from: Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine: Volumes 1 and 2, 18th Edition (Hardcover)
I love these books!!! First of all, they are beautiful! The pages don't seem to be as shiny as the previous edition, which is always a plus if you study under lamp light. Tons of illustrations, photographs and charts. The ink on a couple of pages does seem to be a little off, but nothing major. I've only just started using them but from what I've seen so far it is awesome. Latest classifications and diagnostic criteria for diseases like RA. Also the dvd seems to be very useful. I've only gone through the neurology exam, but it seems to be a high quality video with important information. I think these books are worth it, especially for the price!

There is so much information is these books! I haven't really gotten to dive into them, but from what I have read so far they are precise and good reading. Not too overwhelming.

I've enjoyed Harrison's for years and this latest version is still a fabulous resource whether I need a quick reference or would like an in-depth treatment. Lots of helpful images, video clips, charts, and diagrams. The writing is formal but usually quite clear and to the point. I find it an essential resource for practicing medicine!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great textbook, October 9, 2011
This review is from: Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine: Volumes 1 and 2, 18th Edition (Hardcover)
A little different from the 17th edition, this book comes in 2 volumes and an addition CD that contains chapters the book doesn't and also a few other features such as how to preform certain tests. I purchased this book for a course at my college- it wasn't required but recommended. I found that this book explained things better than some of the teachers notes and was an easy read. The included CD could have been organized better, it runs via an internet browser when opened- I think it's adobe but it opens up through which ever internet browser you use. The CD can be confusing to use and some of the features were hard to use- sometimes the volume didn't work on the included videos. Although the CD was a bit of a bust and the book is rather heavy it is a great text to get if you are interest or currently in a medical career.

4 stars because:
-The CD can be a hit or miss
-The text is a great learning and refreshing tool

5.0 out of 5 stars Harrison's = Good Medecine, November 4, 2011
This review is from: Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine: Volumes 1 and 2, 18th Edition (Hardcover)
Potential buyers should know right off the bat that this book is for people who have a medical background only- your average person is not going to be able to understand much of it.

So who is it for then? Well, I've been in medicine for 15 years and find this book all over the hospital so really just about any health professional who wants a general reference book for how to manage adult diseases of practically any system (such as GI, respiratory, neurological disorders to name a few) will find this book to be a good resource.

Having said that, the book is mainly written as a resource for internal medicine doctors, that is docs that focus on adult medicine and have had special study and training focusing on the prevention and treatment of adult diseases. So if you're in the medical profession, deal with adults, and are looking for a good reference book on adult medical conditions and treatments, this huge and comprehensive volume is probably just what you're looking for. One caveat though, while there is a wealth of info in here on how to manage and treat adult problems, there is no mention of how to better get patients to do what they are prescribed to do (exercise, take their meds, eat less fat..) and so I also recommend health professional check out The Sixty-Second Motivator for tips on increasing patient compliance. After all, what good is the best medical advice if no one follows it?
