For those with patience, the cultivation of fruit trees from seedlings can be rewarding. Bennett ( Harrowsmith Northern Gardener , Camden House, 1982) provides information on beginning the home orchard including site selection, planting, pruning, grafting, and espalier. The chapter subtitled "the environmentally friendly fruit garden" focuses on solving pest and disease problems using organic methods and integrated pest management (IPM). Subsequent chapters address cultural needs of specific fruits with listings of recommended varieties. The text is enhanced with historical references and quotations. Given the shortage of popular information on fruit tree culture, this is highly recommended for most Northern (Zone 6 and colder) libraries.
