This is a book that will grow along with my son. Some of the story line is difficult to understand, but my son gets the basic concept. Right now, he loves to point out all of the different elements on each page: a train! a car! a boy! As he ages, the book will begin to take on more meaning.

The book is about a dog who does not want to take a bath, so instead he runs out the door and finds mischief while playing around in town. He starts to get hungry and lonely and finds his way back home, but the family doesn't recognize him because he's so dirty. He used to be a white dog with black spots, but now he's a black dog with white spots.

This is a classic children's book and one that I'm so glad we have in our home library. It's really a must. The size is just right and the book is quite sturdy for the adventurous toddler grip.

We even found the companion DVD and I'm amazed at how the animation only enhances the story, not over powers it. It's animation style is a direct link to the book. We love it!

Harry the Dirty Dog... and More Playful Puppy Stories (Scholastic Storybook Treasures)

This was one of my favorite books as a kid so I knew that I HAD to get it for my son, especially since he loves dogs too. This edition is so cute, and the board book makes it perfect for little hands that like to rip paper. I plan to get this for future kid gifts.

My 1 year old son won't sit still for very many books, but he makes me read this one over and over again. I'm looking forward to getting more from the series so I can have a little more variety!

I'm not sure that this book has a moral to it, but perhaps it is: that it's important to stay clean (because then your loved ones will know who you are), but that getting dirty can be a lot of fun. No, just joking around, there's moral, there doesn't have to be, it's just a great story with great pictures. Every child should have this book. Every parent should ensure their child has it, it's great fun.

My twin toddlers love this board book. The pictures and text are engaging and the premise of the story is really cute. I've read this story for them over and over again, but I'm still not tired of it myself.

My three children grew up with Harry - now my grandchildren are enjoying all of the books in the series. Simple stories are the best ...

I don't know what it is about this simple little story, but it's a book I remember loving as a kid and now my kids love it, too. It's just dated enough that the social history nerd in me finds it fun, but not dated enough that modern kids won't like it. It would have been dated even when I first knew it, in the late 70s/early 80s - but I never noticed or cared. The clothes on the mom and daughter, the coal chute, the smoke at the railroad yard - all part of yesteryear. But the story endures. Harry hates to have a bath so he buries his scrub brush and runs away, gets dirty, misses his family, and has to convince his family that he, now a black dog with white spots, is really their white dog with black spots. Just a simple story about a dog having fun and a family's love for their pet. I love that it's a board book, makes it easier for my girls to handle and I find it easier to read with a kid or two (sometimes three!) in my lap. Not sure if the board book is shortened from the non-board version - if so, the gist of the story is here and we love it. This is one I never tire of. Wish all the Harry books came in board version!

We began reading this book to my son when he was 9 months old. It was an immediate hit and is now a regular now part of his bedtime routine. Parents will appreciate the timeless story and children will enjoy the illustrations.

My daughter was about 16 months old when she first started "reading" this book and it has been one of her favorites. It's taken a beating and we've had to tape it back together but it holds up well to toddler play.

I bought this book for my nephew for his birthday because this was one of the few books that I distinctly remember from my childhood and wanted to give him that memory. I'm glad books like this are still in publication!
