Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-K—Harry and his best friend, Horsie, are inseparable. One night, when he can't sleep, he climbs to the shelf that holds his new bubble-making machine. He creates bubbles that begin to surround objects in his room and float them out the window. That's not a problem until one of the diaphanous orbs picks up Horsie and silently drifts into outer space. Harry's adventure in rescuing his beloved stuffed animal is enhanced by retro-style, computer-generated illustrations in beige, blue, and black with touches of red and gold. Planets that hang from Harry's ceiling, a crescent moon shining into his room, and the racecar posters decorating his walls all foreshadow the boy's quest. The intriguing pictures vary from one or two per page to entire spreads, creating interest and flow. This simple story looks as though it could have been written and illustrated in the 1950s, but it will appeal to today's readers.—Maryann H. Owen, Racine Public Library, WI END

4.0 out of 5 stars Super cute book! May 31, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
My boys and girls alike love this book. The illustrations are brilliant, and the story line is so sweet. Harry loses Horsie when a bubble carries him away into space, so Harry takes his rocket ship and chases after him. It is a regular in our bedtime story rotation around here.

Harry and his favorite stuffie, Horsie, were cuddled up together in bed, but both of them were wide eyed and awake because moonlight was shining through the window. Harry's "Super Duper Bubble Blooper" was just calling him from the shelf. He cautiously lay down on his belly and put one foot down on the floor and told Horsie to come along with him. They tiptoed across the room and Harry, with a grin on his face, looked up to the shelf. The two of them piled some toys up and soon the "BLOOP BLOOP BLOOP" bubbler was theirs. It wasn't long before bubbles began to float around the room.

BLOOP! One bubble caught his toy train and it quickly floated out the window toward Les Fleurs de Regine. His shoes, his robots, cars, planes and trains began to head to the sky. Next thing you know a horrifying thing happened . . . one of the bubbles took Horsie and "carried him up and away." Harry quickly donned a superhero outfit, his helmet and goggles and boarded his rocket ship to find him. Harry raced past Venus and Mars. No Horsie. He didn't turn up on Saturn, but "he did find his cars." Off to the Milky Way, but no Horsie. Was he ever going to find his best friend or was he going to travel the universe forever in search of him?

This out of this world charming space adventure will delight your imaginative youngster. I smiled at Harry's best friend, Horsie because in this house there was no going out anywhere without a best friend. Any stuffie, blankie or binkie afficionado will be able to relate to Horsie. I loved the way the artist captured Harry's little leg reaching its way to the floor. The retro-comic artwork with its colorful, but slightly darkened nighttime overtones, was very complimentary to this space adventure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Our son absolutely loves this book April 24, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
We bought this book on a whim for the incredible art and it sat on the shelf for a long time. One night I got it down to read to our two year old (who rarely sits still for books) and he was enthralled. He loooooves this book. Actually love may be an understatement. He will walk to his room and retrieve the book at various times of the day to have it read to him. I can't speak highly enough of this book and the Cookiebot sequel and we look forward to future editions in the series.

Harry and Horsie is a wonderful mix of friendship and adventure. Katie writes an immensely amusing and fun story for children to grasp onto and accompanied by the visually appealing artwork, this book is sure to be a hit with kids. Who wouldn't want to take an adventure into space on a rocket ship to find their lost toys and best friend Horsie that were carried away by bubbles? I sure enjoyed it and look forward to telling my family and friends about this amazing children's book! A true classic every child should read, or have read to them!

Perfect for my 3 year old. Doesn't drag on like some children's books have a tendency to do. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Like Calvin and Hobbes for a younger audience September 29, 2011
Format:Hardcover
Harry and Horsie are best friends. And then one night, Horsie gets trapped in a bubble and floats off to space. Harry must rescue him. Based on Dave Letterman's son, the story is charming and fun. Illustrated in a classic style it will take parents back to their own youth. It is almost like a Calvin & Hobbes without the cynicism. My kids loved this story on first reading and asked for it again and again. It will soon become a family favorite. Van Camp and Agnew have created a great story and hopefully there will be many more adventures with Harry and Horsie to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars my new favorite children's book November 29, 2010
Format:Hardcover
I absolutely love this book. I bought it this summer for my 3 year-old and we have read it almost every night for 5 straight months. He usually wants it read twice, and then must have his "horsie" to sleep with. The story is wonderfully simple and fun to read aloud. The illustrations are retro and fabulous. I am a mom of 7 (six boys and one girl) and an artist who would love to be a children book's illustrator one day, so to say this is my new favorite children's book is really saying something. I love it and would recommend it to anyone. (The name of the reviewer says Aaron, but this is his wife Laurie reviewing this book. )
