"Warm, funny and with a special brand of outsize magic, Harry and the Monster is the perfect picture book for frightened youngsters worried about night time monsters or bad dreams." Chorley Guardian "This book is firmly on the top of the bedtime story pile. I also really liked that the days of the week were worked in; great for nursery age children learning days of the week." Families Online "Each page is filled with colourful illustrations and big, bold text, making it eye catching for little ones, a book they want to read over and over again." It has laugh out loud moments and will become a firm favourite." Sarah's Book Review "Harry and the Monster is the perfect bedtime read to help take away any fear of night-time monsters or things lurking under the bed!" London Mums "With a not-too-scary monster, repetition and suspense, together with funny illustrations, take for instance a jelly-spattered monster, or one with prickles in his bottom and sporting Christmas tree decorations, this is one to make small children giggle at bedtime or any time." Red Reading Hub "Packed with wit and bold illustrations, Harry and the Monster is a hilarious read on how to deal with nightmares, teaching children how to rationalise their fears and humanise their monsters." Little London Magazine "This clever story shows children how to deal with night fears and bad dreams." Some kids truly believe that monsters are hiding in their closet, under the bed and lurking in dark corners of their room. Most times its just not true. On the other hand, Harry has a monster that actually appears every night for a week.

On Monday night, Harry had a bad dream –
a bad, scary dream about a bad, scary monster.
ROAR!
Went the monster.
AAAH! Shouted Harry, waking everyone up.

Of course this goes on every night and Harry doesn't want to go to bed. But each night he gets a little advice from his parents on how to take control and make the big hairy purple and green monster just a little less scary. Pink underwear on the monsters head that's stuck in jelly could possibly be just the trick. But, this monster pushes back. Can Harry overcome this fear? You will have to read the story to see.

Parents and teachers can use this book as a tool to teach young readers how to conquer their fears and turn monsters upside down on their heads. The purple and green monster isn't really that scary and readers will see why as they identify all of the silly characteristics of the monster. Large colorful pictures with oversized words make for a very interactive story any toddler would love and never fear. It would be a good idea to have little ones draw and color their own scary monster in jelly.

Both of my girls went through nightmare stages. I wish I had this book back then. Mongredien is smart to tackle the monster issue with ideas other parents have probably used in the past: Mom says to imagine him wearing something silly so he won't be so scary, Dad checks under the bed to make sure he's not there, etc. This helps the story make sense to kids. Their parents have probably told them some of the same things.

East also makes this book work by drawing the monster and his antics in such a zany manner that kids will be laughing more than scared of what's going on, all the while relating to Harry's fears about the monster.

I loved this book beginning to end.

Highly recommended!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. This review contains my honest opinions, which I have not been compensated for in any way.
