Editorial Reviews

Two albums on one CD. Featuring 'Harry' (1969) and 'NilssonSings Newman' (1970). Bonus tracks, 'Waiting' and 'Snow'.Standard jewelcase with slipcase. 2000 release.20+ years before his 1994 death from a heart attack, American singer/ songwriter Harry Nilsson released several albums that did well in the charts, spawned some hit singles, got lots of critical acclaim and won the respect of his peers (including The Beatles, who were huge fans). However, Nilsson's back catalogue has never gotten the same just reward ...until now! BMG's Camden subsidiary in England has reissued all of Nilsson's best records for RCA, all digitally remastered with bonus tracks, the original cover art and specially packaged in standard jewelcases within full color slipcase covers.

This is actually a 2fer of Nilsson's Harry album and Nilsson Sings Newman. Both albums fit together really well (particularly since Harry was recorded just prior to NSN and closes with one of Randy's tunes). Nilsson Sings Newman offers a more textured less smooth production style which fits well with Newman's ironic wit. The only other artist besides Newman that could do justice to his material was Harry (and, at times, Harry actually could do Randy better than Randy).
I'd stick with the domestic versions of both (Harry is available from DCC Compact Discs while NSN is available from Buddah)as both feature more bonus tracks, hence more bang for the buck. If you're on a budget this 2fer is a great choice.

Of all the CDs I own, this is my favorite. The selections are extraordinarily original and Nilsson's voice has the tenor that fits them to perfection. The Rainmaker story is wonderfully chilling and can give you goose bumps, and The Puppy Song is a truly endearing story of friendship.
This is the only album of Nilsson's that contains these particular songs. I recommend it highly.

If you read and can follow the stream-of-consciousness liner notes accompanying Nilsson's 2nd album, AERIAL BALLET, The Beatles' own publicist himself, Derek Taylor, who wrote the liner notes to the album, himself validates a rare piece of pop music legend, not a mythology but an actual truth. The story goes something like this. Derek is sitting in his car, in a parking lot in an affluent Hollywood neighborhood while his wife is shopping. He is listening to the radio and becomes mesmerized by Nilsson's single "1941" and not being able to get the amazing vocals out of his head he buys the album, PANDEMONIUM SHADOW SHOW. Blown away completely, he buys an entire box of the album, 25 LPs, and he passes them out to his friends, including all four of the Beatles in far away England. Lennon is so transfixed by the album he listens to it repeatedly, non-stop, for a marathon of 36 hours. A few months later, in early 1968. The Beatles hold a press conference to announce their newly formed Apple Records Corporation. During the Q&A John is asked to name his favorite American recording artist and he promptly replies, without a note of hesitation, "Nilsson". Paul is asked the same next and he replies "Nilsson". You can watch this historic moment on the wonderful documentary film "Who Is Harry Nilsson And Why Is Everybody Talkin' About Him?", as the reporters ask on down the line and George and Ringo quickly follow suit, "Nilsson...Nilsson". Quite the moment for Harry and a large mystery for Beatle fans who could hardly lay their hands on a new artist whose sales were not mass market, absent to those of us dependent upon department stores in the late 60's suburbs. I myself did not buy a Harry Nilsson album until the release of The Point in 1971 and Nilsson Schmilsson later that year.Read more ›

If you don't know Harry Nilsson's music, or only recognize "Everybody's Talkin' at Me", you're are missing some AWESOME music. This guy is a true genius, but since he was too introverted to every perform on stage, many people have never heard of him, especially if you weren't on the planet in the '70's--arguably the greatest decade of pop music ever. If you want a real treat, and get to know Harry, get the DVD "Who is Harry Nilsson? (and why is everybody talkin' about him)". You won't be sorry.

I was always a major fan of Nilsson. He had a unique style which enabled him to sing just about any genre of music. I had previously owned both "Harry" and "Nilsson Sings Newman" on vinyl, but getting two on one CD was too good to be true. I hadn't heard these songs for such a long time and they made me realize all over again what a great artist Harry Nilsson was. I am thrilled with this collection. I just wish he hadn't left us so soon.

Two of my personal favs on one CD makes this one a "must have" after wearing out the old LPs with repeated plays. Nilsson, who sadly passed away in January of 1994, left us with his legacy of crisp vocals and catchy songwriting, the likes of which are rare, then and now. His collaboration with Randy Newman is a real treat for Harry's diehard fans, which included Lennon and McCartney.

I love Harry's music but with Nilsson Sings Newman - I wonder if someone can tell me if he only used minor keys and went down the musical scale on most of the songs because they seem downright depressing. They were performed well but don't be melancholy when listening to Sings Newman because you may become very depressed.

Harry was great and of the two bonus tracks, Waiting is the type of song that Nilsson did so well.

Great CD for anyone who loves Harry Nilsson and also likes Newman songs...I bought because I do, but was a little disappointed in the arrangements for the songs, not quite what I was expecting. Also, the background instrumentation is sometimes not as high quality as you would expect from Nilsson. That said, its stil not a bad deal - give it a listen.
