Review

A treat for all Harry fans, it has gorgeous line drawings. -- Natasha Harding The Sun It's the coolest colouring book ever. I like the pictures of Harry and Hagrid best Phoebe, age 7 Harry Potter fans might not be able to employ the charm with which the boy wizard managed to turn his primary school teacher's wig blue, but - wielding their muggle felt-tips - they will soon be able to bring colour to the world created by JK Rowling thanks to a new colouring book. The first official Harry Potter colouring book is out on 5 November, publisher Studio Press, said today, and is already storming the bestseller charts, in ninth place on Amazon.co.uk's bestseller list with almost a month to go before publication. Running to almost 100 pages of artwork drawn from the Harry Potter films, it "includes all of the fan-favourite scenes, creatures, and characters of the series", said the publisher, "from Dobby and baby Norbert to Quidditch games and the unforgettable final battle between Harry and Lord Voldemort". -- Alison Flood The Guardian From Warner Bros comes an enchanting book filled with characters, film stills, scenes and detailed drawings used in the making of the Harry Potter movies. There's Dobby the House-elf, Hedwig and baby Norbert, as well as Quidditch games to partake in and, of course, the ultimate battle between Harry and Lord Voldemort. -- American Express Essentials http://www.amexessentials.com/top-colouring-books-for-adults-2016/ --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Attached to this review will be a silent flip-through of the entire coloring book so you can make an informed decision as to whether or not it will work for you.

Rather than discuss how this is like or different from the books and/or movie series except to note that the iconic images seem to be taken primarily from the movie, I will discuss only how I feel about it as an adult coloring book.

The book is illustrated by a variety of artists and it shows. Some of the designs are simply drawn and some are complex, a few with small intricate details that may be difficult to color. I am really glad that they did not over draw the faces with too much detail as I will be able to add my own blending (this was a problem with the recent Sherlock coloring book.) Some of the designs are quite heavy on black spaces – something I would have preferred to put in myself. Otherwise, the designs are well done artistically. They have included glossy pages at the end of the book – perhaps so we can know what colors are to be used or simply as a fun addition to the book.

The book is printed on both sides of off-white heavyweight and non-perforated paper. A good number of the designs are printed across two pages and merge into the bind (which is glued rather than sewn.) I did a count and this is what I came up with: 40 one page designs, 4 of which are “wallpaper” repeating patterns; 19 designs spread across two pages – 5 of which are wallpaper style designs. Unfortunately, a good many of the iconic scenes were in the ones that were spread across two sheets. I was able to bend the binding enough to get the book to lay flat and found that the pages lines up very well and I didn't lose any of the picture into the binding itself.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Harry Potter stories so, like everyone else on the planet, I got excited when I learned that Scholastic Books was going to be releasing a new Harry Potter coloring book. For sure, there have been other Harry Potter coloring books, but lately there seems to be a resurgence in all things Harry Potter. There are books that take you behind-the-films such as Harry Potter Film Wizardry and Harry Potter: Magical Places from the Films: Hogwarts, Diagon Alley, and Beyond. And, earlier this month, the gorgeous illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone: The Illustrated Edition (Harry Potter, Book 1) was released. For me, this resurgence is terribly exciting because I came to read (and fall in love) with the series well after the last book was published and thus missed out on the release of and excitement for all sorts of Harry Potter “things.”

Anyway. Back to the coloring book! I was really excited that I would be able to re-visit the wizarding world via coloring. Especially since the blurb on the back cover promised:

“…explorations of Hogwarts Castle, the Forbidden Forest, and much more…[and] pages of magical creatures and iconic scenes from the films…as well as some of the marvelous props used in the movies…”

However, once the coloring book arrived in my hands my excitement turned quickly to disappointment.

Loved this book as soon as I saw it!...but then I started flipping through the pages! One looks like a 3 year old drew it and the other is a double page of dancing, nipple pierced trolls! What!?! There's main characters that don't even have double pages but these ridiculous trolls do?

I am sad. I was so looking forward to getting this and I am still happy to have it but first of all, shouldn't you know the actual Ravenclaw crest if you are creating Harry Potter merchandise? I mean, it's an eagle for goodness sake - Ravenclaw's crest has an eagle - not a raven. So irritating. And I would have loved more pictures of places - how do you have a coloring book and no picture of Hogwarts or of The Burrow? I don't know. And it came all dented up - but that's on Amazon not on Scholastic.

For those hoping to receive a coloring book on par with some of the popular adult books out there, you will be disappointed. While this might be slightly more advanced than a little kid's book, it's only marginally. If you're a fan of books similar to the "Enchanted Forest" or "Secret Garden", this will likely not meet your expectations.

Even as a fan of Harry Potter in general this is only so-so. The artwork seems to be assembled from different sources and some of it is better than others. Many of the illustrations don't take up the entire page leaving lots of white space, while other illustrations utilize lots of black - effectively coloring in large portions whether you want it black or not.

I gave it three stars since it's technically usable and does have a couple of nicer illustrations but on the whole didn't offer what we were looking for, and it's being returned.
