As if the fantastic artwork were not enough to make me buy this book, the unbelievable amount of source information on the filming of the Harry Potter franchise puts this book in a rank of its own. I have seen other well-made pop-up books about famous films, but I have never before seen one that explains about how the film was made and how the scenes were conceived. This book goes so far as to tell you the real-life name of Hedwig and the fact that the owl had "stand-ins." Because of this level of detailed information, reading it is a very satisfying learning experience. And if you are thinking that this information targets a more mature audience, think again. This book's descriptions of behind-the-scenes facts are written in a manner that most reading levels can easily grasp.
Adding together the brilliant artwork and informative content of this book, I would highly recommend its purchase to any Harry Potter fan.
The book has five pop ups, which are of Diagon Alley, Hogwarts, Magical Creatures, Magical Games and sports and the Dark Arts and they're accompanied by little side pop ups and interactive features. I'm amazed at how much stuff they put into the book. I feel like every time I open it, there is something I hadn't seen before.
I think all the pop ups are great, but where are Ron and Hermione? They are nowhere in this book. I would have liked to see them in at least one pop up. Even though there is no supporting cast, I still think this book is a must have for all Potter fans.
That said, I did find some issue with the pop-up construction. These are large pop-ups and I assume the construction is complex, but I didn't expect to have continuous issues with pop-ups sticking half-open and having to finagle with them to get them to straighten up. Also I don't know if it's just a flawed book I have, but the dragon head is positioned so it looks like it is staring at the floor with her chin/jaw planted on her chest. It looks awkward and wrong, bothering me every time i look at that page.
I had purchased two because it was such a great deal at the time ($9 ea.) and am still intending to give the second as a gift. I know that even if the pop-ups are sticky my friend (a true HP fan) will still love it.
I spent over an hour with grandchildren, ages five and ten, pouring over the book, spread by spread, taking turns reading the narratives, and matching features of the pop-ups to the numbered lists on several spreads. We were all especially delighted with the pop-up of Hogwarts School of Witchccraft and Wizardry, especially when we read that "J.K. Rowling described her vision of Hogwarts as 'a huge, rambling, quite scary-looking castle with a jumble of towers and battlements.'" That's exactly the way it looks," said the ten-year-old. In our case, the book was a pleasure for ages five to eighty-three.
Where the book sometimes misses is that it uses photos from the films and in some cases these, when cut out and reduced, are occasionally blurry in detail and thus ineffective. However the major spreads such as Hogwarts and the Forbidden Forest with Hagred's hut are very fine. If you are a Potter fan you will love this.
There are only a few pop ups in the book, which include Diagon Alley, Hogwarts, the Forbidden Forest/Hagrid's Hut (basically Hogwarts Grounds), the graveyard and the Dragon task for the Triwizard tournament. It is very well made, and I feel that a lot of effort has gone into making this.
The actual information in this book is satisfactory, but makes you want to know more. You can't expect too much from a pop up book like this. It isn't made for any casual reader. Only some Harry Potter fans would actually be able to appreciate it, and small children would enjoy the pop ups. Each page has a few smaller thing that pops up too.
The first part includes a letter from Dumbledore's office, a poster of the book's cover art and an Undesirable No. 1 Poster. You are greeted with a pop up howler (which you have to actually open yourself) which also talks about how the howlers are put into the movies.
Overall, this gets only 4 stars because of the very specific audience that would probably enjoy this. (Also, I preordered this and Amazon shipped it to me so that I received it a day in advance, so kudos to Amazon too).

I purchased this book hoping to use it for a larger project. I was pleased with the illustrations and the way the book is constructed. Now it is idea time.
GREAT book. Pop ups have the pictures on the front and the back. Really nice big pop ups. My 6 year old grandson is to young to watch the movie but he loves the book.Published 1 month ago by S Carol Hazel
