Third time lucky?,
By Dr. Christopher Coleman (HONG KONG) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Harry Potter Stationery Kit (Stationery)
... And so I will attempt yet again to review the Harry Potter Stationery Kit totally objectively, without regard to the motive or intent of Scholastic Books or J. K. Rowling. Where the kit delights children so that they learn to love writing it is a terrific thing. But as I look at it I must reflect that many of us have had the unfortunate experience of delight at a gift turning to disappointment upon closer examination. The Harry Potter Stationery Kit seems certain to allow our children to share this experience. It contains a mere 8 sheets of paper and 10 envelopes, and some peripherals. Can a love of writing be learned with only eight pages of stationery? Or are we so controlled by the television mindset that our children are expected and even encouraged by the products they use to lose interest in any activity that takes a prolonged effort? Paper is not so expensive that this product couldn't come with 80 sheets of stationery at the same price--compare the price of this product to a Harry Potter book of some 400 pages, which you can now purchase on sale at almost the same price. Surely it violates some copyright or trademark for the recipient to take his Harry Potter stationery to a color photocopier, but what else are they to do? The situation with the envelopes is even more bizarre. Most stationery kits come with more paper than envelopes (so that you can write letters longer than a single page), but here the situation is reversed--10 envelopes and 8 pages of stationery? I'm reminded of hotdogs and buns--they never seem to match. And also like hotdogs, there is a lot of filler here. A single small sheet of stickers (again, how exceedingly miserly), a "pocket photo-album" (in Hong Kong the photo developers GIVE these away), a lightning bolt stamp (for all your lightning bolt stamping needs), and a 24 page address book. Now, how many children aged 5 -12 do you know that need or even want an address book? Oddly enough, there is no Harry Potter pen or pencil or eraser, stuff kids would use every day. Oh, yeah, and I forgot--it also comes in a box. Probably once the paper is all gone and the stickers stuck, the box is going to give your child the most play value of the entire kit. Clearly the world is not the way I'd have it.

This is the best stationery kit ever. I have it at my house and use it every day for school. A lot of my friends ask me about it. They all really like it too. Everyone at school that has read Harry Potter books wants it. If you are a fan of Harry Potter I would definatly suggest that you get this.

Cute stationery, cool stamp, nifty address book, but I used up all eight pieces of paper and ten envelopes the first day. What good is that?

Real Cute,

I love the stationary. It comes with cute stickers (including the snitch and Norbert and the Hogwarts insignia), a lightening bolt stamp, an address book, etc. It's all great except for one little thing, the paper does not fit in the envelope! I tried to send a letter and I had to trim the edges which was a waste of time. That's the only reason why it got 4 stars. My suggestion, is use the paper for notes or other things and use the envelopes for things that will actually fit inside!

Harry Potter Stationery Kit,

This stationery kit is absolutely fun. I ordered one for my 11 year old son from Scolastic Books at school, and both my boys loved it so much I have spent the last two hours online trying to find it to order one for my 9 year old! Both my 11 and 9 year old boys have written letters, and can't wait to write more. Never thought that would be possible. I just hope they can come out with a re-order for the writing paper and envelopes, or put them on a cd you could order for the computer. The lightning stamp is too cute, and even has its own little place in the box. The photo album is just right for a kid to put little pictures in to share with their friends at school,we already put some in it, and my son can't wait until tomorrow. And my boys just love the address book, they came and got mine and copied addresses out of it for their own. This set is just too much fun for kids (please remember it is for kids, not adults, kids letters are much shorter), and for all you get, it is a good price. I intend on ordering as many as I can.

My Pen Pal - Anthony - My nephew,

I really loved the Harry Potter stationery! Anthony's reading life came alive with Harry Potter. We are pen pals so I knew when I ordered he would love the collection and write more often. Being a pen pal with a nine year old is fun all by itself but it sure helps to send something so wonderful to someone who will enjoy it so much! Thanks!

Utterly Disappointing,
By A Customer
This review is from: Harry Potter Stationery Kit (Stationery)
I wish that I'd read a few reviews before buying this item. Maybe I would have saved myself some grief and money. The packaging was good on this box and it caught my eye directly but the contents were not at all as described in the write up on the back. The stickers were thin and cheap. The paper also, was very thin and too short for any practicle letter writing. Most disappointing however, was the lightning bolt stamp. It was more a broken line than anything else. It's too small and faint to use and plainly speaking is quite a joke. I love Harry Potter and have bought a lot of excellent items, but this was definitely not one of them. |
