I'm an adult with a reasonable command of Spanish as a second language. I can read a newspaper fairly easily, and I can hold mutually interesting conversations with people, so long as their speech isn't too slangy, to regional, or too fast. I found Potter #5 in spanish translation to be an entertaining way to do some "continued reading". If you're an adult who feels sheepish about reading kid's books, trying to improve or maintain your command of Spanish, this will give you a good excuse.

There's nothing like reading a book like this to make you realize that there's many different kinds of vocabulary. Compared to say, magazines, newspapers, or more technical books, Potter #5 is chock-full of everyday dialogue, human relationships, colloquial expressions, and words having to do with emotional states, facial expressions, noises, and such. Not to mention the more specialized vocabulary, like, "spell", "dungeon", "sorting hat", or "dark arts". I certainly found a good dictionary to be useful.

Although this book is published by a press in Spain, the characters speak a Spanish closer to the Latin American than the iberian variety (e.g, the "y'all" second person plural verb inflection is not used, and "coger" is avoided). This is, I suppose, a reflection of the demographic weight of Latin America vis-a-vis Spain, and, for all I know, is standard practice in one-size-fits all translations. I suspect it is a careful translation, although my Spanish really isn't good enough to tell.

If you think that reading a translation from the English is a poor way to learn about hispanic culture, I would reply that 1) the Potter books are hugely popular in spain, 2) This is a european, not a north american book. whereas we have not a single authentic castle, Spain has hundreds of 'em. And 3) who cares, if it gets you reading spanish?

As soon as I got my copy of this book I was thrill.The translation is great and it retained the original enthuciams that the english version has.I recommed this book to anyone that knows spanish or is learning,this will be the ideal gift.

He leido todas las historias de Harry Potter y aunque esta no es mi preferida, quiero hacer notar la mala calidad del libro, las hojas se desprenden tan pronto la lees.. al terminar el libro tienes 893 hojas sueltas!!!!

Really, really bad binding. Fell apart on the first time through - and I am gentle with my books. Really excellent for language learning in Spanish, though. Not as traumatic and dark as book 6 (mistereo del principe).

La autora madura y, con ella, sus fantásticos personajes. Ahora, en vez de recurrir a breves momentos de intensidad dramática, las novecientas páginas de este enorme volumen son todas emotivas. El punto negro es la edición mexicana de Salamandra, pésimamente encuadernada. Me parece que es una triste falta de respecto al consumidor entregarle un libro tan disfrutable de leer en un paquete de papel tan desagradable de sostener.

If this is the same paperback binding we bought at our local bookstore, it will fall apart on you. We had one fall apart, and returned it for another copy that fell apart also. The book is just too large for the type of glue and paper used.

Este libro, como todos hasta la fecha en la serie de Harry Potter, ¡es genial! Es el más largo (a no ser que el sétimo y el final sea aún más largo, ya veremos) y Harry termina por perder a alguien muy querido, lo cual a nosotros los lectores igual que a Harry nos parece una injusticia cruel. El tema central del cuento siempre se desvía cuando se trata de la vida social de Harry; la autora llena mucho espacio con acontecimientos no muy importantes para la historia y hasta un poco aburridos. Y hay una queja imprescindible con la casa impresora. Como este un libro tan grande, las hojas deben ser cocidas pero lamentablemente son nada más pegadas con pegamento. Hay que tener cuidado con las hojas o se le caen. Aparte de eso, este libro forma parte de la historia exitosa de Harry y sus aventuras y vale la pena y el tiempo leerlo.

I'm enjoying this book but I was quite depressed to finishing reading page 319 and turn the page to see 537. This is for the hardcover. I don't know if other have had this problem but it's something to watch out for....

I am not a native spanish speaker so I can't comment too much on the translation...I'd say not as good as Prisionero de Azkaban and that the story is pretty slow paced coming out of all the action in Caliz del fuego.

I also had a problem with the binding on the paperback. All the pages came unglued after the first reading.

The hardcover binding is much better quality than the paperback, and no pages have fallen out yet. This is the darkest of the Harry Potter books- most of the story was pretty gloomy. But I liked it anyway. Great for Spanish practice!
