I have not been so disappointed with a book in a long time. The author comes across as obviously NOT a Harry Potter expert. On first reading, without consulting the actual books, I found more flat-out errors than I could count. The reading turned into a contest where I tried to spot mistakes. I don't want to list them because it might be fun for others to pick them out as well. And that does not even include the editorial errors. The typeface is ugly and hard to read. Words are misspelled. The notes for "Chamber of Secrets" abruptly end partway down a page and are mixed with the last notes for "Prisoner of Azkaban." Then the misplaced notes are repeated again in the proper location. It is a very obvious mistake. There are a lot of different guides to the Harry Potter books out there. Take your time and find one that is more accurate than this one. I am returning mine.

A Bungled Guide to Magic,

David B. Mouser must have tried to write this book without ever reading any of the Harry Potter books. It is filled with typographical errors (I hope that's what they are) and just blatant errors. For example Mouser would have us believe that Harry meets Sirus Black in Book 2 Chamber of Secrets. There is a reason that this book is an UNOFFICIAL GUIDE--

Complete waste of money...,

This book is full of basic inaccuracies, from actual events to the spelling of characters' names. And the inconsistancies are not merely the occasional typo; for example Rubeus Hagrid and Lily Potter are spelled incorrectly throughout the book. When reviewing book 2, events from book 3 are chronicled as well. The book is obviously produced by someone out to make a fast buck, someone who has not even read the Harry Potter series. Overall, the content of this book is a sham.

I gave this book to two twelve year olds and one ten year old. They called me the next day to tell me how wrong the book is. I asked them to write down the errors but the list was so long they got tired of reading it. This book should be taken out of circulation.

Disappointed Harry Potter Fan,

This review is from: Harry Potter's Muggles' Guide to Magic (Hardcover)
I was extremely disappointed with this book. Like many other Harry Potter fans, I wanted to read more about the books that I was intrigued enough to purchase this title. I should have skipped this book. Not including all the typographical errors, there were so many problems with its content. It was not useful and I don't recommend it.I was disappointed with the illustrations as well; they were cartoonish and inaccurate to the descriptions in the Harry Potter series. Don't waste your money on this book. If you really want one you can have mine.

a waste of money,

my children asked me to buy this book on web. after receiving it, i concur with some other comments here that it is a waste of money. the book just contains some glossary, 1 page synopsis for each book, plus some 1-2 lines notes about what happen at what pages. may be ok for potter's enthusiasts, but still too expensive for an unoriginal 80 pages of work. i'll also have some reservation on buying books through the internet without having the chance to look at the inside. last, to the publisher - HP publishing, i'll think twice before buying books from this publisher. it can publish anything.

Only useful for people too lazy to read the books,

Totally useless (and wrong in places) to anyone who has ever read the real books. It's basically a cliff note of the high points of the first four Harry Potter books (although Cliff notes is being kind... it's more of a point listing of things the author found interesting). There is not much real reading in the book.

I'm a big fan of the Harry Potter series and when this book came out it was more of an embarrasment to the series than I thought. I saved up [$$$]from my allowance for this book at a bookstore and bought it. When I read it, I was dissapointed from how lame it was and that it wasn't written by J.K. Rowling herself. It's not worth a penny, but even if you buy it anyway, sell it. I only collect books from the real series, not books in disguise.

The entire book is pathetic. The writing is awful, and the editing is worse. The drawings are fair for a book that is aimed at 7 year old children, but not so great for anybody older than 7. The binding is poor. It seems to me that this book is a blatant attempt to suck money from the pockets of unsuspecting children; and I can readily see why it is not approved by J. K. Rowling. Her standards are much too high for trash such as this. The book isn't offensive because of its content, but rather because of the utter lack of care with which it was produced.DON'T BUY THIS BOOK!!! I bought it and I am well and truly vexed. |
