5.0 out of 5 stars a little book with a big message
I bought this book for my three year old son who was so affraid of dark that it took him hours to fall aspleep even with me sitting next to him. After reading about little Harry conquering the terrible Whatzit in the cellar to protect his mother, my son is no longer affraid of the "monster on his bedroom window". 3.0 out of 5 stars Great book! Still was afraid of the basement...
I had a copy of this book growing up. Whether my mother purchased it for me to become "empowered" against my fears or they just thought it was a good book, I'll just say this: this book did NOT help me overcome my fears of the dark. They just made me MORE afraid of the basement.

However, the story has stuck with me all these years, though possibly because of...

5.0 out of 5 stars a little book with a big message, December 9, 1999

This review is from: Harry and the Terrible Whatzit (Paperback)
I bought this book for my three year old son who was so affraid of dark that it took him hours to fall aspleep even with me sitting next to him. After reading about little Harry conquering the terrible Whatzit in the cellar to protect his mother, my son is no longer affraid of the "monster on his bedroom window". In fact, he told me that he wacked it away with a broom just like Harry did. With its enpowering message and vivid adorable illustration, this book is definately the best among over a hundred children's books we have purchased.

I remember getting this book when I was in first or second grade in the 70's. I still own the same book today. It has been read many, many times by myself and my family. This story has become my sons favorite as well. I look forward to buying another one to retire this one to the shelf, as it has told it's story for over 20 years.

I loved this book as a child so much that I still remember the title and the story. I bought it for my 3-year-old and now she loves it. It makes her feel empowered to get rid of her own "monsters."

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Children's Book, December 29, 2011

Delightful! All of my children loved this book and now my granchildren love it too! Perfect for ages 3 to 6. I think kids must identify with Harry's fear of going into the basement. The braver he becomes, the more the Terrible Whatzit shrinks!

4.0 out of 5 stars What did you do with my mother?, July 3, 2011

My husband had this book as a child. My child destroyed it. Now we have it and I love it. Great price, awesome book.
This book has awesome 70's color theme. The little boy gets to confront and conquer his fears of the basement and discovers his mom really does believe him. Oh, and who doesn't like cookies with milk?

3.0 out of 5 stars Great book! Still was afraid of the basement..., May 27, 2011
This review is from: Harry and the Terrible Whatzit (Paperback)
I had a copy of this book growing up. Whether my mother purchased it for me to become "empowered" against my fears or they just thought it was a good book, I'll just say this: this book did NOT help me overcome my fears of the dark. They just made me MORE afraid of the basement.

However, the story has stuck with me all these years, though possibly because of the terror I felt about it.

I ordered this book, as I used to have it as a child and had it thrown away by an evil stepfather cleaning out the garage! :-(
I was so happy to have found here at Amazon. The book came just as described, brand new, and in a timely fashion. I'm very pleased with this item and would definitely shop again!
Thanks!!

While reading a Maurice Sendak book to my kids last night, I remembered this book! I couldn't remember the titles only some details about a broom, a monster and cellar. Finally I found it!! I remember my mother reading this book to me over and over. I am definitely buying it for my 3 kids. Hopefully it is as good as I remember.
