Book Description

September 1, 2002

The poems in Hartley Field are by turns witty and amusing, lyrical and moving. But always they are clear and -direct.

Wanek writes clever, closely observed poems on subjects as diverse as "Butter" and "The Hammer," work which is in the tradition of Francis Ponge and Pablo Neruda. These are often humorous and are enormous fun to read. Similarly, a number of poems focus upon children’s games and activities ("Checkers" and "Jump Rope," among others), and explore them physically and psychologically.

What is most remarkable about this collection is the consistent originality of the imagery and elegance of language. In the poem "Late September," we find "a plumed of smoke hand-feeding the wind." The object poem "Lemon" observes that the fruit has "bumpers on both ends like a Volkswagon." A racoon advancing into a dark yard is described as "a creature both manly and womanly/capable of force or seduction." Here is the first stanza of the elegiac "After Us."

Rain is falling through the roof. And all that prospered under the sun the books that opened in the morning and closed at night, and all day turned their pages to the light. . . .

Joyce Sutphen says of Wanek, "Nothing about what she says or sees is routine...(Hartley Field) is a book of revelations: in poem after poem, some ordinary object or event is split open with such keen tenderness that the heart is caught off guard."

Connie Wanek was born in 1952 and lives in Duluth, Minnesota. She is the author of Bonfire, published in 1997 by New Rivers Press. Her poems have appeared in The Atlantic Monthly, Poetry, The Virginia Quarterly, Country Journal, and many other publications. She has been awarded fellowship support from the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council and The Jerome Foundation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nature and Spirit in Hartley Field, September 11, 2008
This review is from: Hartley Field: Poems (Paperback)
Hartley Field is a nature preserve in Connie Wanek's home city of Duluth, MN. While her poetry collection by that name is inspired by a deep love of nature, each of these wonderful poems moves beyond nature into a realm of spirit and moral meditation. There is humor in these poems as well as deep feeling for family and place. Connie is a fine poet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smooth, gentle poetry for our rough, brash days, March 3, 2011

When I think of a Connie Wanek poem, I think of a refreshing, cool, clear glass of water. She uses everyday language, simple imagery, and uncluttered lines to give us unexpected insights behind common objects and occurrences in our lives. "Hartley Field" holds daisies, teeter-totters, lawyers, peanuts, lemons, poodles and even a hammer, but you'll find yourself surprised at the angles from which Wanek makes you view each of them. "Hartley Field" is a place of stock-taking and reflection, a place where find ourselves smiling, grimacing, and sympathizing as we are made to recall our own similar moments captured in each poem. And Wanek has a knack for a last line that gives a poem a pivotal twist. As an example, here's her poem, "Daisies":

In the democracy of daisies
every blossom has one vote.
The question on the ballot is:
Does he love me?

If the answer's wrong, I try another,
a little sorry about the petals
piling up around my shoes.

Bees are loose in the fields
where daisies wait and hope,
dreaming of the kiss of a proboscis.
We can't possibly understand

what makes us such fools.
I blame the June heat
and everything about him.

We are blessed: Connie Wanek is only in her late fifties, meaning she's got years of poetry writing ahead of her. That alone keeps me optimistic about the future!

I don't have the vocabulary to review this book anymore than I have the vocabulary to review a bottle of wine. I am not a writer, much less poet myself, but I sometimes like to read poetry. I enjoy reading this author's poetry.

I am no relation to the other Henricksen reviewing this book.
