He proposed, and interrupted her response with, “Before you say, ‘yes’, you need to know that someday I want to have a sailboat and sail around the world.” She cried. These were not tears of joy.
Twenty-five years later, they went to sea. This is the story of their first year as cruising sailors, and what she learned about: weathering storms, provisioning, entering strange harbors, and how living on a small boat with one’s spouse isn’t the long awaiting life-time honey-moon imagined by landlubbers.
If you’re planning a long sea voyage with your loved ones, read this book. It won’t provide all of the sailing or travel information you need, but it will make you smile and prepare you for many of the experiences encountered while sailing in paradise. You’ll learn some things here that can’t be found in cruising guides or how-to sail and cruise books. As Barb says, “This is the stuff I didn’t know I needed to know before we left.”
Barb Hart and her husband, EW, slipped the dock lines and left Maine in October, 2010. They are still happily married, sailing aboard La Luna, and getting haircuts in exotic harbors.

From the Author
We lived aboard our sailboat in Maine, year-round, for eight years. I began to blog about this experience, and continued blogging when we left Maine in 2010. Prior to leaving, I had taken on-line courses pertaining to cruising, read many books, and subscribed to a number of cruising and sailing magazines. We talked with anyone we met who had cruised to the Bahamas, the Caribbean, and beyond. Still, there were many surprises during our first year at sea. You don't need to read this book before setting off on your own cruise -- but it may help you. There is a bit of "how-to" info, and you will learn how I handle laundry and defrosting the freezer. There is more information about cruising relationships -- particularly those I share with, EW, my cruising partner and husband since 1985. This is a much bigger challenge than most first mates and captains expect. Fortunately, we have been able to meet every challenge with a huge helping of humor. You will also learn a bit about some of the islands we have visited and more about Grenada, where we stayed for months during hurricane season in 2011. Cruising full-time is an exciting, challenging, boring, exasperating, and enticing lifestyle. We love it and I hope you love reading about our first year at sea.
