Flea infestation of pets versus the environment

Hartz UltraGuard Plus Flea and Tick Home Spray protects your household by killing fleas, flea eggs, ticks, roaches, silverfish, earwigs, ants and other insects on contact. The spray is designed to work on carpets, rugs, upholstery and pet bedding and leaves no lingering odor, sticky mess or stains. One treatment works against preadult fleas for seven months.

If left untreated, fleas can quickly multiply and spread throughout your home. Fleas can lay 50 eggs a day; so, it’s important to use a formula that breaks the flea life cycle. UltraGuard Plus products contain insect growth regulators (IGR) which kill flea eggs, larvae and pupae to stop fleas from coming back.

Update: It has been 3 years since my original review. I did not grow a third arm or have any illnesses with this spray. Between the Hartz and the use of raid fumigators, flea traps, and foggers, I was able to rid my home of fleas. Recently, my new cat has started to bring them in again and I am going back to the routine that help rid of them last time.

Original Post: First, I will acknowledge that this isn't for everyone and it does smell. It is a pesticide and yes they can cause serious harm. But it also kills fleas, which for some of us may cause more harm. I really can't stand living with fleas. My body reacts strongly to flea bites in an allergic way and one bite can prevent me from getting a good night sleep for about a week (by the way, Benedryl liquid and fire ant sting first aid gel really helps). My cat brought the fleas in the house, even though he was taking Advantage. At first the fleas left me alone because they seem to only love the Cat. But after the cat past away (possibly from to a flea-born illness), I became their main target and they were out for blood. I tried foggers and even flea traps. The treatments reduced the fleas but still those buggers exist. That is when I went to a combination of insect repellant on my skin and Hartz home spray on my clothes. Yes, I know it says keep it off your clothes but once I sprayed my shoes and pant legs with this stuff and myself with deet insect repellant, the fleas stayed off my skin but contacted the clothes and died. Repellant alone would keep them off me, but it did not get rid of them and any time I didn't have the repellant, they knew. They always knew. The Ultraguard killed them and each day the sitings become less and less.

So, the population of fleas is dying down. I am still using foggers and flea traps to catch strays and kill the larvae and eggs, but I expect to have a flea free home soon. In the meantime, I haven't been bitten, which is great for my health, and the fleas keep dying.

i have two outside pens for my dog to use. i spray this product on her rugs and anywhere else in both pens to keep the ants and fleas away. i have not seen fleas around so far but the ants are always trying to be a pest. it keeps the ants away. the product is wrapped tightly in strong plastic to prevent any problems during shipping. my shipment arrived fine. i am real happy with this product and it is safe for me to use around my dog's pens.

This product is excellent for managing fleas and ticks in the home, it knocks them DEAD. The only reason I still use this product is because it WORKS. Other than the fact that it works great this product STINKS, it smells like outdoor wasp spray.

We got a new puppy from a breeder, he came with some fleas, we washed him, but he spread them to our cat, so we got the Frontline stuff for them, they still got fleas. I was vacuuming daily and bathing them both about every other day..but the fleas kept getting on them, so I decided to vacuum and empty the contents into a large zip lock bag to see if they were in the carpet, sure enough tiny little baby fleas were there, I have small children and really didn't want the hassle of bombing our large house so I decided to try this stuff first, but what I did was pulled all linens (blankets, stuffed animals, ECT, and vacuumed the rooms, emptied the vacuum contents into the ziplock bag and did a quick spray in the bag just to see what happened before i did my whole house--THE FLEAS THAT WERE IN THE BAG WERE DEAD IN LIKE 5 MINUTES!!! I just sprayed the upstairs and I am anxious to see if it works as well as I think it will..

This product cost more and underperformed compared to the aerosol flea spray I brought afterward to finish the job. The bottle just could not spray under desks and crevices like the aerosol can so it is more work. Also, I had a problem with the spray bottle stop pumping when the product got down to the 1/4 mark so I had to pour the rest of the bottle in a Solo cup and pump it out from that. Go with a aerosol spray it just works better!

This the best spray available as part of a multi-step process to keep fleas out. If you have outdoor cats, just give it up. For folks like me with multiple indoor cats, combined with Advantage II drops it works perfectly. With drops alone I would see fleas back in two to three weeks. However, by spritzing their favorite sleeping spots and cat-tree-perches once a week the fleas stay away. Seems to me that unless you kill the eggs and larvae that fall off them they keep coming back in force. I also pray the doorway floors as well. It smells fine, and the cast do not mind it at all.

I sprayed this over my small dog's bedding and left it to "dry" for about an hour before I let her on her bed again. My dog rubbed her face all in her bed and then licked herself and that same day had some type of a seizure.... She is doing fine now and I'm not sure if it's a direct correlation with the product. Since she is an older dog, but I had not done anything different that day other than use this spray. I haven't used it since but it did get rid of the fleas that were in her bed.
