A Further Evolution,
This review is from: Harvest Floor (Audio CD)
Cattle Decapitation started as a straightforward grind band. With Humanure they shifted into a more complex mix, and karma.bloody.karma was a true demonstration of the band's vision. the harvest floor is apparently the product of that vision. The production is absolutely brilliant. Travis' vocals are stronger than ever. Josh incorporates many techniques in his riffs and solos. The addition of Dave was a fantastic decision for a drummer, his ability to carry a fast grind beat but also put his own spin on it is great. This cd is brilliant, every song is fantastically written. If you are a fan of any genre of metal you should listen to this.

Progression in grind... even epic?,
By
This review is from: Harvest Floor (Audio CD)
This is how progression in metal should happen - with The Harvest Floor, Cattle Decapitation has further developed their style without the risk of alienating their devoted fans. The progression over the last few albums has been gradual - no shocking changes of direction here (ahem, Cryptopsy, ahem). The songwriting is more elaborate while still intensely brutal - some tracks even have an epic feel, very rare in this style of death. The production is crisp and clear, revealing all the complexities (and crushing heaviness) of the music, as well as incorporating some new sounds in their arsenal, while avoiding the trendy pseudo-industrial effects of other bands.
Definitely not a disposable album - rather I think metal fans will be listening - and talking about - this album for years to come. Very highly recommended!

Amazing,

This record is probably the best death metal album of 2009! The vocals are unreal and they create an instrument in themselves, his range both high and low, is like nothing that I have ever heard. From the first song to the last song my jaw is on the floor with all of the technical, fundamental, and amazingly heavy display of brutality.
(Just listen to the end of the first song if you want to put your fist through someones face!!) PICK THIS UP NOW!!! You will not be disappointed if you are a fan of death/grind or if you are looking for something completely blasphemous this is what you want for sure.

We. Are. Horrible. People.,
By Nicholas Foley (San Diego CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Harvest Floor (Audio CD)
This band of vegetarian stalwarts had me on the fence for years until somewhat recently. It was seeing them earlier this year tear down the Jumple Turtle in San Marcos that I decided they had a spirited quality I really liked that transcends the social floundering of most death metal . Maybe it was frontman Travis Ryan engaging a heckler into a point-counterpoint discussion over the quality of his band or maybe it's just that this music is as intense as it is riveting. Either way, every bruise was worth every dollar and I came home with a newfound appreciation for the music. "The Harvest Floor" is easily their most defined album statement to date, with no two songs sounding the same, a feat for really any modern metal album. Ryan's double tracked vocals have a ludicrous bent to them at times, but they compliment the riffing and drumming just fine and it's the band here that really succeeds this time around with the aid of infamous producer Billy Anderson, who brings these tracks alive with making the bass guitar rumble and the drums pound. The gruesome samples also don't hurt any!

Though I prefer Napalm Death's work, and non-gore-grind in general, Cattle Decapitation are just so darn good at their craft. This work continues where they left off strong with their last album.

If your into deathmetal or (deathcore) whichever you want to call it then you might like this.
Don't expect breakdowns but more guitar oriented parts instead. The vocals can be pretty strange at times and I mostly mean the screaming parts. At times (rare) it can sound like trash. Otherwise the lower range is pretty good. If your a metalcore listener this probably isnt for you but, I liked it. I wasn't thrilled but I did like it. It leans on the more metal side of metalcore but its got alot of time changes and you don't have to sit through repetitive parts thats for sure. I think they are a talented group. I enjoyed the cd personally to an extent. It generally isnt in my normal rotation but I liked it.

The next step,
This review is from: Harvest Floor (Audio CD)
I was a little disappointed with the "Karma Bloody Karma" album so my expectations for this release were not that high. How wrong was I. With "The Harvest Floor" these guys show a great improvement in songwriting and musicianship. Songs are damn fast (the inclusion of David McGraw on the drums was a good choice) with a lot of tempo changes. The introduction of some melodic sections (like in "We Are Horrible People", "Regret & The Grave", "The Rip Beneath The Rind") will stun some fans that were accustomed to the in-you-face grinding of their early records... for me it's like a breath of fresh air, that sections spice up and improve the diversity of this album. Vocals are sick as always, thy fit perfect for the twisted and gory lyrics. Overall mix is great, you can distinguish every instrument without problems. So, if you're willing to hear an extremely heavy death metal album, "The Harvest Floor" must be on your CD shelf.

Best Death Metal album of 2009!!!,
By
This review is from: Harvest Floor (Audio CD)
I have been into Death Metal since 1989 and have seen hundreds of shows.
This is the best death metal album of 2009. A weak song does not exist on it. The vocals are truly unique (excellent live too.) The percussion, song writing, and guitar playing are also remarkable. The mix and overall production of the album is excellent too. It is a shame that they are not getting the exposure that they deserve. Though they presently blow away Lamb of God, I believe they should have opened up for them this year. I suppose bands would be afraid to be shown up. Job For A Cowboy's Ruination is great also. You might even venture outside of death metal to Psyopus.

This album is unlike other Cattle Decap CDs. It's really good!,

The main reason it is better is that there is a new drummer. The guy from Sleep Terror. He is really fast, tight and technical. His timing is way better than the last guy and it makes a world of difference.
This album is very brutal and heavy. I hated their last CD, I love this one. It's dark and heavy. Hyperblasting drums, crazy guitar, and insane throat ripping vocals. If you did not like Cattle Decapitation, then check this CD out, because it is light years better than all the other of their CDs. |
