Book Description

November 9, 2005
In the second novel of the Kathmandu trilogy, 'The Harvest,' Carl Brecht, the anthropologist, goes to Chitwaun in pursuit of the kidnapped boy, Nigel. At the jungle camp in southern Nepal, he boards an elephant in search of rhinosceros, discovering that poachers are harvesting the body parts of the endangered species. In spite of evidence that Nigel has been in the jungle, Carl leaves the area frustrated by the deception of the London coven. Carl travels to India to visit his friends, the Pandavas. He arrives in Kalinagar near the Nepalese border just before the Hindu Festival honoring the Goddess Lakshmi. The anthropologist gets caught up in the frenzy of the State of Emergency, where renegade government officials are enforcing compulsory sterilization of the men in Kalinagar and the nearby villages. After experiencing a great deal of violence, Carl becomes involved in an unexpected romanace during the Hindu Festival in honor of the Goddess of Lakshmi. Before he departs for Pokhara, he's keenly aware that the London coven was present in the area with the missing boy, Nigel.

About the Author

Nick Cibrario, the author of "The Garden of Kathmandu Trilogy," traveled to Nepal four times. This beautiful Himalayan Kingdom is the setting of his novels, "The Pomelo Tree", "The Harvest" and "The Shamans". Nick first went to Nepal with the Peace Corps, where he taught high school from 1962-1964. He was intriqued by the Nepalese language, culture, and religion (Buddhism and Hinduism), which he incorporates into his trilogy. Upon coming back to the U.S., he resumed teaching English while working on several manuscripst with Mable L. Haugen, a literary agent. In 1981 he toured India for a month and spent time with his Nepalese friends in Katmandu. In 2000 Nick returned to Nepal at the request of his publisher to update the trilogy and attend a Peace Corps reunion. At that time he traveled to all the places which wrote about in his trilogy, including an overland trip from Kathmandu to Lhasa. Nick has a B.A. degree from the University of Wisconsin at LaCrosse. He did graduate work at Marquette University and the University of Pennsylvania in South Asian Studies. He completed his master's degree at The College of Racine. 5.0 out of 5 stars Novel, travelog, some history and a cultural odyssey, October 6, 2006
This review is from: The Harvest: The Garden of Kathmandu Trilogy (Paperback)
This book, as does the first book in the trilogy, The Pomelo Tree, contains all the above elements. The Pomelo Tree introduced American anthropologist Carl Brecht, researching a book on shamanism, as well as a London witch coven in Nepal in the 1970's to conduct some dark ceremonies. The coven leaders consider an eight-year-old boy to be the incarnation of the Demon Ravana and carry him off for use in their ceremonies. This book describes Brecht's pursuit of the kidnappers and his adventures along the way. These adventures provide the reader with colorful and vivid descriptions of the place and its people along with an intimate, firsthand account of the cultural practices of the region. This book is ideal for the reader who likes to learn about foreign times and places while enjoying a good story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another thriller..., September 27, 2006

This second in the trilogy picks up where The Pomelo Tree leaves off. I thought I knew what the harvest was all about when it began, but obviously I was wrong. The harvest has another sinister, and quite gripping, meaning. The story is so well written that I found myself weeping and mourning with the families, as if they were my own. I was glad I had the third novel, The Shamans, in hand when this book ended. I couldn't stand the suspense.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reaching Critical Mass!, April 10, 2006
This review is from: The Harvest: The Garden of Kathmandu Trilogy (Paperback)
The encroaching future events built into The Pomelo Tree continues in The Harvest. Nick Cibrario has woven the history of the area with the mystique of the area's culture so creatively that the reader is caught in his web. I feel like I'm seeing, and experiencing, the events as they progress. Well written! I can't wait for his next contribution to this amazing story!
