5.0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary March 1, 2012

It's hard for me to believe it has been 40 years. I can tell you where I was when I first heard the title track of Neil Young's follow up album to the amazing "After the Gold Rush"....but I won't. Suffice it to say that the object of my young love in those days, and I, didn't expect this album to be named for a love song. The opening notes surprised us....

"When we were strangers
I watched you from afar
When we were lovers
I loved you with all my heart.

Because I'm still in love with you
I want to see you dance again
Because I'm still in love with you
On this harvest moon."

Now it's today. I downloaded this single after seeing the mediocre movie..."Eat, Pray, Love", with Julia Roberts in the lead role of Liz. It brought me back, strung me up short in the theater, it was so unexpected. Perhaps I hadn't heard it or thought of it in decades.

The poignancy of Liz' memories is when she imagines that she and her estranged husband dance to the song that SHOULD have played at their wedding reception (the song that did play gives us a totally charming flashback, perhaps Billy Crudup's only likeable moment in the movie). Into the mix comes the first 8 bars of "Harvest Moon", instantly making you realize that Neil Young is a genius. I'm transported by Young's ethereal imagery, and the lump comes back into my throat. I try hard to match my own memories of Harvest Moon with the dancing scene between Crudup and Roberts, but my own memories are more tangible and more connected to the song than the scene on film. However, the moment stands out as a reason for me to watch the film on DVD.

And now I can hear it once a week in the download. Outstanding.

This tender love song brings to mind all the feelings I had for my husband when we first met. Each time we play it we feel like dancing! The sweet sounds of his steel guitar add just the right emotion.

Neil Young has written some of the best songs of the late Twentieth Century, and I think this is one of the best of the best. Everytime I listen to it it stays with me for days.

5.0 out of 5 stars Neil Young's Best July 27, 2013

I run hot and cold with the music of Neil Young. However "Harvest Moon", is in my opinion his best; one of the best songs ever written and sung, by anyone. It's sweet, sensitive, lyrical, and melodic.
