Pull out the pin and throw it back....,

This review is from: Has a Gambling Problem (Audio CD)
"This Time Next Year" is perhaps my favorite emotinal-punk album of all time. It was a flawless album, in that every song was anything but: gritty yet heartfelt vocals, surging emotions, and crunchy, buzzing guitars. Unfortunately for the Movielife, "...Has a Gambling Problem" is both the follow up to "This Time Next Year" and their Drive Thru debut; both criteria for excellence in my mind. So with such high standards, did the Movielife choke?? Yes, and no...All 5 songs are very catchy and crispy produced. Even the artwork is well above average. All the tracks with the exception "Up to Me" are at an easier pace than older material, but enjoyable none the less. One obvious departure though is emotion...Vinny sounds as if he could care less about the words he's singing. Many of the guitar parts have the same feel from song to song, with little variation. Although the lyrics retain their "broken-heart" motif, the aggression and thematic variation are both absent. I would have to say that, despite disappointing expectations, "Has a Gambling Problem" is a little above average. The best song would probably have to be either "Walking on Glass" or "If Only Duct Tape Could Fix Everything." The worst song is "Hand Grenade," Drive Thru certainly hyped that one enough. Less "Hand Grenade," more "Single-White Female" (see "This Time Next Year").

The Movielife... Has Broken My Heart,
By Geoff (Philly) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Has a Gambling Problem (Audio CD)
Many this EP is so terrifyingly average that I really want to give it away to the first person who wants it. The guitar work is exactly the same on every song, and they are all grindingly slow. I'm a big fan of bands experimenting, changing their sound, but this is not change; this is the reverse of progression. Has a Gambling Problem is one of the most uninspired recordings I've ever heard, and it breaks my very heart coming from a band that was so unique, so good, and so rocking. They still are in my opinion; I really think that Drive Thru forced this out of them, that they weren't really ready to write any new material. I'm still going to be at their shows, because I think that maybe they'll get back on their feet. Do not buy this. Buy "This Time Next Year" on revelation records. THAT is a great cd, one of my favorites. And keep cheering these guys on, they're still awesome!

The best thing The Movielife has released to date,

I love The Movielife. Bottom Line. Every one of their CDs are filled with heartfelt, catchy yet agressive pop-punk songs. The thing that sets this EP apart is now I can listen to The Movielife with a great recording! Finally! The songwriting on this EP has definitely progressed...and it does so perfectly. All five songs are amazing and I would go as far to say that these songs are the best the band has ever written. Buy this EP...it's so cheap so you can't go wrong. If you already like the Movielife, or if you like bands like The Ataris, New Found Glory, Blink 182, Glassjaw, Saves The Day, or any pop-punk or pop-punk-hardcore, BUY THIS!

This is definetly a very good EP. Every one of the 5 tracks is amazingly good with each craft unique. Heres a rundown:1. 'Walking On Glass' - One of my favorite all time Movielife tracks. Fast paced through out and really catchy. And great lyrics too. Totally love it. Overall, i totally dig this EP and most people will do so too. I think out of the 5 tracks, people will like at least 4 of them. Movielife are an awesome band, and it sucks that they broke up. They put on quite a live show too.

The Movielife is one of my all time favorite bands, and have never ceased to amaze me. Their EP on Drive-Thru is with out a doubt the best EP's I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. Incredible guitar riffs paired with emotional, catchy lyrics ultimatly land the Movielife a permanent place in my CD binder. For only 5 songs and 7 dollars, the Movielife will not dissapoint you if you like any of the other bands on Drive-Thru Records.

Wow! So I just saw these guys in concert last night (w/Face to Face) and they were so awesome! They got the crowd really into the music and performed amazingly! I was so impressed I immediately bought this CD (the only one I could afford at the time.) After the concert I was lucky enough to actually meet 4 of the guys and they were SO nice! They really seemed genuine about meeting their fans and weren't in any rush to move on to another fan (or other important business.) And despite the dissapointment of Alex leaving the band, his replacement Dan, was so awesome! He probably talked with us the longest and was telling us all about how much fun he's having, this being his first week and all. I reccomend everyone buying this CD cuz here is a band who is genuine about their music!! You guys rock!!!!

The Movielife's new EP is certainly excellent. Unlike what others have said about this cd, it has fantasticly written lyrics and very catchy tunes. Bands never stay the same, they evolve over time, and incorporate new styles.Just fantastic :D.

The movielife from long island is a great all around band. All their releases are really amazing and they put on one of the best live shows however i am not sure about this release. Overal this cd is very well written and lyrical great. I just wish Vinnie's voice wasn't so polished. I liked the stratched quality on the other records. On most of the previous releases i felt that each of them had a raw-ness quality to them, one of the reasons i enjoy them so much. The "raw" to this album is not so evident. Hopefully this ep will draw fans of it to check out their older stuff which is truely amazing. Either you LOVE the movielife or you dislike them. They are one of my favorite bands and truely talented nice guys. I LOVE the MOVIELIFE

The Movielife rock. I really liked "This Time Next Year" and I was eagerly awaiting this EP from Drive Thru Records. It's out now, and it's great. All 5 songs are awesome (Walking On Glass, Hand Grenade, Up To Me, If Only Duct Tape Could Fix Everything, Operate). My favorite is "Hand Grenade", that song has a killer guitar solo in the middle. Can't wait for the next full legnth. These guys are awesome. Get this EP and "This Time Next Year", you won't be disapointed!
