My father bought this book for our family when I was about 12. I marveled at the illustrations and imagery. I loved hearing my dad's voices for all the little furry gophers (or are they woodchucks? We still argue over this). Wendy Watson has a beautiful way with words. Each page is poetry, and full of cozy, warm, comforting images of winter. It always leads to stories of my Idaho upbringing in the cold and snow. Of the simple ways to warm up with a fire and cocoa. I read it now to my own boys (yes, in character)...it continues to be the favorite way to ring in the holiday season.

Format: Hardcover
The little woodchucks are so surprised when their mother tells them that she can smell winter coming in the air, so they go to their father and he tells them the same. And so, the family begins to deal with winter - gathering supplies, playing with snow, making hot cider and telling stories.

I must say, I found this to be a very good book. It has a very nice, family-oriented story. The illustration work is quite nice, and the text is just the sort to entrance a young reader. My little one and I both enjoyed reading this book, and we highly recommend it to you and your little reader.

My daughter, now 35 years old, loved this book as child. We lent it to another child, and in the way of many good books, it never came back. I am delighted to have located a copy for my daughter to read to her little one.
