The "Barrel of Monkeys" game may be one of the easiest, simplest games ever to be marketed. It consists of a plastic barrel about the size of a grapefruit filled with little plastic monkeys, arms extended and bent. (You've seen them, either in Toy Story, 12 Monkeys, or in your genetic memory. These things have been around forever.) The goal of the game is to pick up a string of monkeys by holding the top one and looping arms together. It's about as complicated as pick-up sticks, and more fun -- after all, it's monkey-based.
The fun of Barrel of Monkeys isn't the game. It's the score of plastic monkeys. Monkeys are inherently funny, plastic loop-armed monkeys even moreso. Consider the price, too: a couple dollars for a whole barrel of monkeys. How can you /not/ afford to buy it?

My six year old got a Barrel of Monkeys for Christmas. After dumping them on the table and trying to hook them, we both found it a bit difficult and frustrating and put it aside. And then I recalled similar feelings from my childhood. After reflecting on this, I decided, instead, not to dump them on a hard surface, but to hook them from inside the barrel. This is more fun and the ability to hook more than a very few becomes attainable. My six year old is now having a great time with the monkeys and has been able to hook seven at a time. If you're frustrated or bored--try hooking them from inside the barrel--still challenging (especially the last one!) and much more fun.

The item shown IN THE PICTURE is the original, classic Barrel of Monkeys. I ordered three of them ($21 worth) to use as a prop in an upcoming leadership workshop. Unfortunately, the product shipped was NOT the product shown, the product I needed, or wanted,or expected -- but an inferior substitute product. This may seem trivial and insignificant. And stupid. But what they sent me is completely unusable, as it is not what I need. So now I have to take time and effort out of my busy day to return these for a refund. There's no excuse for any vendor on Amazon (or anywhere online) to show a picture of an item that's different from the actual product they're shipping. That is called deception. Perhaps the intention was innocent, but they're just setting a customer up for disappointment and annoyance. This may seem like a stupid and trivial complaint. But now it's caused a huge inconvenience, and it's costing me in time and effort to now have to return this item, and then go back to the drawing board to try to find what I actually need. It's all just too much monkey business.

We searched for red and got green. Oh well, we could live with that. However, there are only 12 monkeys in the barrel. Not enough to do much with and for this much money I expected more.

Cheap imitation of the original. I would not recommend this. They are marketed as the original Barrel of Monkeys but these are not them.

I didn't even know there was a game involved with this toy before reading the other reviews. The point of a barrel of monkeys isn't to play a game - it's to play with a bunch of monkeys linked arm in arm. My 2 year old son dumps them out and practices cleaning up. We use them to talk about quantity and counting. We tell stories with them. We link their arms and string them around the house (or off my glasses or his hat). It's a barrel of monkeys - don't over think it.

Wanted red and got blue. There was no option to select color, so I went by the photo. Lesson learned.

In addition to the intended use they make a great bath toy because they float, don't hold water (and don't grow mold). They usually live hanging from the basketball net in his room.

The object of a Barrel of Monkeys is to be the first person to make a monkey chain out of 12 monkeys.

To play, you dump all the monkeys out of the barrel and unto the floor or table. Each person is given a monkey and in turn tries to build a chain by hooking the arm or leg of another monkey. You may not touch any monkey but your top monkey.

The game comes in a yellow barrel that is filled with monkeys. The monkeys go back into the barrel when the game is over for easy storage.

This game is easy for the younger children to understand (but not necessarily to play) and promotes hand-eye coordination and patience. It's recommended for children 2-5. It's made of durable hard plastic and is almost impossible to break. It's also an inexpensive game and easy to clean up.

My son also enjoyed playing with the monkeys outside the game.

We would recommend Barrel of Monkeys to others.

I bought it after seeing a friend with it - it was just not quite as well made as his (obviously original 'Monkeys in a Barrel'. However, the game works well and I was so pleased to receive the red barrel, my favourite colour.

After using it at a Holiday at Home event I took it up to my granddaughter who was very excited - what I did not realise was that the red monkeys in barrel of monkeys featured in Toy Story 3 and I was shown it. She was very excited and so I left it with her.

The order came much more quickly than I was told which is always a good sign - well done to the supplier.
