Tricky but fun,
This review is from: Clue DVD Game (Toy)
Clue DVD is only for people who love Clue. (If you are just a moderate fan, it might be more than you want.) Instead of just figuring out 3 things as in regular Clue, you have to figure out 4. And there are 10 possibilities under each of the 4 categories. Plus some of the clues only become available as the game moves along. (But there are extra clues given by the Inspector and the Butler.) So it is much more involved! As a previous reviewer says, the instructions are not as clear as they could be. On the basic menu that comes up for each player's turn, it is confusing what you are supposed to do. You can either move to the next room, or use a secret passage. If you just move to an adjacent room, then you don't use your remote on the DVD menu. You only press the remote if you use a secret passage. Then when you get to a room by either of those two means, you also have to make a choice. If you are making a suggestion about who, where, when, or what, then you don't use the remote. But if you summon the butler, look at the inspector's notebook, or want to see an item card, then you use the remote. Tricky? Yes, but it is not too difficult to catch on to. Once we got used to the game, it took us about an hour to finish a mystery. We have thoroughly enjoyed it. Regular Clue seems tame by comparison.

Rockin Clue!,

After I saw the advertisement for Clue DVD I immediately went out to buy it. I've always been a fan of Clue and this updated version provides players with some new twists and excellent graphics. While you are playing the game, the Butler and an Inspector often appear to provide you with Clues about the case. Another addition to the game is added locations and having to figure the time of the crime. Any Clue fan will appreciate this version!

Better than the original,

More suspects, more rooms, more items that could be stolen, and now you also have to solve the time of day. A much harder game on the surface for sure. But the inspector and the butler are constantly providing extra clues from the TV set, and they occassionally ask everyone to contribute 1 card each to help solve the crime. The extra clues make solving the crime easier, but it still takes a bit longer than the original game to solve. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoyed the original game, as it's similar but more entertaining for the family.

Fun Game,
By Shutterbug "Shell" (AL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Clue DVD Game (Toy)
Yes, this is a little different from the original Clue board game, but it is a lot of fun. This game is probably more suitable for ages 11 and up because to solve the case you must be able to operate the TV remote, and there are four things to solve instead of three. One difference is the type of crime you solve... a crime of theft instead of murder. The DVD makes the game. There are only 10 DVD programmed cases to solve, but there are random cases you can play similar to the original board game once you've solved the ten mysteries. If you like the original Clue game, I think you'll enjoy this one too. Our family likes it.

It's not THAT hard.,
By Texas Dad (San Antonio) - See all my reviews

I am just laughing at the other reviews that exclaim "how hard" this game is! For heaven's sake, it's NOT rocket science. Yes, the three of us (Dad, Mom, and 12 year old) had to read the instructions (not a great challenge) when we first played the game, but other than that, one merely follows the DVD and the game is a snap. AND it's fun. It's really NOT that hard. Perhaps the prior reviewers are the same folks who found voting in Florida such a challenge.

The Classic Game of CLue Just Got Better,
By Darryl Y. (California USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Clue DVD Game (Toy)
First off, the Clue DVD Game is NOT for everyone. This game is for people who love the original Clue and want a little more depth into the game.Ten unique cases are integrated into the Classic board, which gives a back-story to each mystery. Players are prompted step-by-step for set- upSet-up is much like the original, except this time, the DVD instructs players to place item cards on certain rooms and the rest in the pantry. Each player gets a combination of suspect cards, location cards, and time cards. In the beginning of the game, players only have the option of taking a secret passage or making an accusation. As time progresses, the inspector will tell players in a very dramatic matter to unlock new options. On any player's turn, he or she moves to an adjacent location. Next, he can now either (1) make a suggestion of any combination of three categories to the player on his left OR he can choose an option on the DVD. (2) Summoning the butler gives all players a chance for the butler to reveal clues that the suspects have given him. The player can now get an item card from the pantry for his hand. (3) He can also look at an item card if he is in a location with an item card. (4) He can read the inspector's note. With the help of the red magnifying glass, he finds the corresponding number in the notebook and reads the clue to himself. (5)He can make an accusation in order to win the game. Accusations are made secretly with the help of the DVD. Several things make the DVD game better than the original. 1.) No more rolling dice. This time, each player has a chance to make a suggestion or collect clues every time they make their turn. 2.) More suspects, more rooms, more items, and an added "Time" category adds the questions of: who stole the item, where was it stolen, what was stolen, and when was it stolen? 3.) The new evidence room in the middle of the board is the place where players make their final accusations. Now, with the help of the DVD, the player's accusation is a secret to the other players. 4.) The DVD gives the game a purpose. Each case adds a story that is slowly revealed by the butler, the inspector, and item cards that are found throughout the rooms. If a player summons the butler at the beginning of the game, he or she may not know what the clue means until other clues are revealed. 5.) Because there are so many more ways to get clues, players don't find themselves asking the same thing to each other over and over and over again. 6.) The Clue DVD game is true to the original. It adds an extra dimension by making finding clues more interesting. Don't like the DVD aspect? You can still play the original Clue with this board. Highly recommended for all Clue fans.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Clue DVD Game (Toy)
Being a Clue fan from when I was a child - I purchased this for my 10 year old. Upon set up we started the game and had to read the instructions about 3 times to understand. Game is similar to the classic in that you need to move to the room that you want to question, however in the DVD game you get to listen to the butler as a choice in your turn or choose to use the secret passage and then as you go along it give you other options. This game is great FUN -- it take a long time to play but that is what game night is all about. I would highly recommend this game.

Too Much Money, Not Enough Game,
By
This review is from: Clue DVD Game (Toy)
I collect clue games, and have several of the UK releases also. I was excited to see another edition of Clue being released, and when Santa didn't bring it, I ordered it for my family. We played it for the first time tonight and first of all, the age range says 10+, now I have a very advanced nephew but I cannot even imagine him grasping this game. The 3 adults who did play this game had trouble figuring out the rules. The 10 cases, are ALWAYS THE SAME, ie when you have played all 10 cases, there is no point playing them again, leaving only general play. Will they release more DVD's for this game and at what cost to us, who already spent nearly $40 for it in the first place. The rule book was very vague, to say the least. We ended up just showing all our cards to each other to finally figure it out. The clues given by the butler are slightly obscure, but we have learned after the first case that you must LISTEN CLOSELY, REPEAT, PAUSE, and WRITE IT ALL DOWN! From these clues you are "supposed" to deduct certain things and check off multiple items/locations/times/suspects. This the part that I don't think a 10 year old could grasp, when 3 intelligent adults couldn't. There is really not any point of even using the game board, w/the 10 cases you have very little interaction with the board. It doesn't make it clear when to move, what ends your turn, and w/3 players, after you run out of item cards from the butler, the board is useless. After the 1st case, they did explain how we were to have deduced the clues given by the butler and the inspector, which will help in solving future cases, but I'm not sure whey they didn't just give you an example on the DVD in the first place. We have not tried general play, but I did read it is just like playing regular clue, only you also have the DVD interaction. My suggestion, if you are a clue fanatic and collect the games, then buy it, although I'd check eBay for a cheaper price. If you do not have the patience to "wait" for the DVD to trigger an event and are used the old style play, don't waste your money. I'm not unhappy I bought it as I do collect them, but I wish I would have paid a lot less.

Reading these other reviews I feel the need to tell people the truth. Granted the first time you play you need to READ instructions, but don't you do this with all new games? The rules are not that difficult to figure out seriously. Our first time playing was with six adults ranging from 20-30 years old, once we played that first time we've had no problems and have played 4 of the senarios now. As long as you are willing to read instructions and realize that it is different then original Clue then you will be fine. It is a fun and more challenging version of a great game. I hope that no one lets these negative reviews sway them, that is unless you are just lazy any unwilling to read rules and play a entire game through.

Clue DVD GameI am ten years old and I love this game! It is a lot of fun to play as a family, and you never know what to expect next. The senerios are new and exciting, and I like the fact that none of them are murder mysteries--only thefts are commited. There are only two things which I do not like as much: When one player solves the case the others cannot keep playing because the game ends then, and there are only ten games to play. I wish they had put like fifteen or twenty games. Also, if the game is taking a while to finish, everone is made to put a card into the center to speed things up. Otherwise, I think this game is a great investment to make. |
