5.0 out of 5 stars "Save me Money!", April 14, 2006

This review is from: Monopoly® SpongeBob SquarePants™ Edition (Toy)
Monopoly has undergone yet another facelift- the Spongebob Squarepants edition features Pineapples and Krusty Krabs in lieu of houses and hotels. Play as SB, Patrick, Sandy Cheeks, Mr. Krabs, Squidward or Gary the Snail. "Community Chest" and "Chance" cards have been replaced with "Treasure Chest" and "Life Preserver" cards. This particular version has a unique twist: a "Plankton coin" is placed on the 1st property ("Plankton's Lab"). Everytime a player rolls a "1" on the dice, Plankton advances 1 spot. When he makes it all the way around the board to the Krusty Krab (which replaces "Boardwalk"- "Park Place" is Spongebob's Pineapple), the game is automatically over, no matter who's turn is next. Players then tally up their net worth ($$$, property and all) and the player worth the most dough wins. This is a nice feature when playing with impatient kids that may not have the tolerance to sit through a traditional Monopoly marathon. Our kids are learning the value of money- my 6 year old son realized he'd have to forego buying the "Mermalair" if he wanted to buy the Krusty Krab. He has since decided to save his allowance for an upcoming Chicago trip instead of blowing it on toys or candy. I also have my kids count the money out to me, which their teachers tell me has improved their schoolwork regarding money. So, yes, this is a very educational game- kids learn you have to earn money and spend it wisely to come out on top. We love it and so will you.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW! After one night, my six year old FINALLY had money values down!, March 18, 2006

I always loved Monopoly as a kid, but I had no idea what educational value it offered until my son used his report card money to buy this. My husband and I played it with him and after the first round his math skills had at least doubled!

He loves it and is so motivated, he has no idea he is learning! I L-O-V-E the Plankton rule! No more three day Monopoly games like when I was a kid, you can play a full game and still get the kiddies to bed on time. I know this is a lot pricier than the original, but I honestly don't think my son would be anywhere near as excited if it did not involve Spongebob!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Game, December 7, 2006

My husband and I purchased the Spongebob Monopoly game after my 2 year old saw us picking out board games. Yes, he is too young to know how to play, but since he loves the show so much, we are finally allowed to play a board game without him becoming impatient. It is also a great way to teach him about taking turns; he picks a character at the beginnning of each game and gets to roll the dice and move his character. As it has been noted in other reviews, this Monopoly game finally has real custom pieces for the houses and hotels. We think it is a lot more fun than the original (possibly because we played the old one too often).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great version of monopoly, May 19, 2009

I really like this version of monopoly. The Spongebob theme makes gameplay exciting. I can't say that I have ever watched an entire episode of spongebob -- I don't even watch TV -- but I get a kick out of the craziness of spongebob.

Instead of dollars you use clams. It's still just paper monopoly money but I actually prefer the paper money to the electronic banking edition. I can see how it would slow game play if you have to wait for young ones to count money but I think children learning to count money is more important than a fast game any day. Playing with people in my age group (mid 20's), the paper money doesn't really slow us down. There is also a little rack in which to sort the money which is very nice.

The spaces on the board (with the exception of the corner spaces) have new and exciting names. I'm always battling for ownership of the Weiner Hut. The life preserver (chance) and treasure chest cards have the same effects as in the original monopoly but again are in the style of spongebob.

The game pieces in this set are amazing. All of the main spongebob characters are there. The pieces are LARGE and durable as opposed to some versions of monopoly. The Pineapple Houses (houses) and Krusty Crab Restaurants (hotels) are plastic but seem durable and add to the overall theme.

I really enjoy the plankton coin rule. When my girlfriend and I play it, we use the rule that when you land on a property with the coin you either 1) get the property for free or 2) pay twice the rent BUT we don't use the rule that the game ends when the coin reaches go. When it's only the two of us playing, the game is always over before the coin makes it all the way around anyway.

The game board is the only downfall in this version of monopoly. The board itself is beautiful but it is folded in four (half and then half again). This leaves a fault line down one half of the board which is a pain if you are not playing on a level surface. I'm also worried about the longevity of the board with all of its creases.

I found Spongebob Monopoly on sale at Toys R Us for about half of what it costs on Amazon. I would recommend this game to those of you who want a cool take on monopoly regardless of whether or not you actually watch the show.

Bought SB Monoply for my granddaughter's 9th birthday (couldn't find it in stores after the holidays/Amazon vendor was excellent). Anyone who is familiar with Sponge Bob and his pals and who has ever played monoply would enjoy the game. It is nice for my granddaughter and me to play for awhile and even better with three or more. My granddaughter is the banker, in addition to playing the game. The game contains the SB subtle humor with the prices for renting/owning specific properties in Bikini Bottom. The game can be played with various ages and crosses generations.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun Game, February 17, 2009

This is a funny twist on Monopoly. I like the option of playing a shorter version with the Plankton token. The game is very fun, BUT I really wish that it was in a full size box. I hate to be a nitpicker but the storage tray is shorter than regular Monopoly so it doesn't have a compartment for each bill. So the banker has to stack 2 different value bills on top of one another and pull out the whole stack to get the bills from the bottom. I also don't like that the board folds into 1/4 of the size instead of half. The way I see it, the more folds there are, the more likely it is to wear out and break apart. We have had ours for over a year and it's still in one piece but we haven't really played it that much. The board seems to be durable though. For the price you pay, it should last forever, but we'll see.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best family game night for the grown ups and kiddos, December 21, 2010

I bought this product from another retailer because the price on here right now is more than twice suggested retail value. Aside from that, this monopoly version is SO much fun. My almost five year old even played because he loves Spongebob and the game lasted three hours. Seriously, he has never sat still for a game for that long EVER. All the properties are Spongebob related: like the Krusty Krab, Squidward's island head house, and Miss Puff's training boat - the kids loved that aspect over the traditional St. James and Boardwalk properties. The characters to play with are large and sturdy - much more so than the traditional monopoly. Even the life preserver and treasure cards (rather than chance etc.) are so colorful and fun. Get this game if you or your children love Spongebob, but I wouldn't recommend paying more than 20 bucks for it.

I purchased this for my cousin and she loves it. Maybe since she is such a Spongebob fan, it provided greater appeal. Always good to have some board games around during those family events.
