5.0 out of 5 stars Build strategic thinking, memory in suspenseful game!
I used to play this game with my brother when we were 8-12. Its one of the few strategy games I could beat him at. Creative thinking can be rewarding or it can backfire! 2.0 out of 5 stars Better-Constructed Version Is Available
I nearly bought this until I read that it involves cardboard and stickers. That's shameful.

Search Amazon's partners and other major booksellers for the "Nostalgia" edition of Stratego. It runs $4 or $5 more. It has plastic pieces with metallic paint.

This game is a blast; you and your kids are going to play it a lot.

I used to play this game with my brother when we were 8-12. Its one of the few strategy games I could beat him at. Creative thinking can be rewarding or it can backfire! The key to the excitement of this game is that each player arranges their own "men" (soldiers, in varying ranks up to Field Marshal) their flag, their "spy"-the only piece that can conquer the opponents marshal, their "landmine" bombs, and miners (who can defuse opponents bombs). As you play you begin to see what arrangements are safest to protect your flag, and allow you to trick the opponent into stepping on your "landmines" while not trapping your own soldiers as you will need them to go out "into battle" as each is needed. The game is suspenseful, as in almost every move, you are engaging an unknown enemy. Will it be a lowly Corporal you conquer, or a General who captures your soldier? Or, even worse, a bomb that kills your soldier, and requires you to bring one of your Miners forth to defuse it? I recently bought this for my 11 y.o. niece (who is too good at chess for me) after one game she quickly caught on to the strategy essentials; now we have very close matches. I was surprised at how much my 6 year old nephew understood the strategy, and how eager he was to play the game.
We made up a modified version to play a shorter game, using a limited number of pieces (2 or 3 of each rank), and he is learning to play well. I highly recommend this game as one that children can play against adults and hold their own. Each game is different because of the variations caused by the placement of the soldiers. This is a "prettier" version than the one I played with as a kid. As long as the colorful stickers last, I assume it will be just as durable. This game is not for kids that get frustrated easily, because, as in chess, each player will lose many battles, and will need to sacrifice pieces to win the game. This game teaches strategic thinking, and like chess forces you to plan several moves ahead. Stratego is a very entertaining way to practice logic, memory and planning!

Stratego is an exciting game that my babysitter introduced to us. I play against my ten year-old sister and seven year-old brother all the time. The point is to find a flag, which your opponent has hidden. But to get to the flag, you have to get through bombs and other soldiers. Each type of soldier(General, Marshall, Scout, etc.) has a rated number. The lower the number, the better. But watch out for bombs because anyone can die by those, except soldier type #8- the miner. This teaches good strategy skills while having fun in a challenge that anyone can win!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great strategy game, June 30, 1999

Stratego is a classic strategy game for two people which takes place on a single battle field with you commanding a set of troops against your an assortment of pieces that must be arranged to thwart the enemy. Offensive or defensive? It's your call. Each piece has a ranking that is used to determine who wins when two pieces meet in battle. There are some pieces which have special properties and rules. For instance Bombs cannot be moved and win in almost any confrontation EXCEPT for the Spy which can unearth the bomb and disarm it before detonation.

And unlike many of the other strategy games, such as Risk, you can quickly get into a game and finish without spending hours at a time.

Stratego is the single greatest boardgame out there. I personally have never stopped liking it since i was 6. It is a game of strategy and out-witting your opponent. You have soldiers from 9 up to 1, a spy, bombs and your flag. your objective is to capture your opponents flag. You can also win by having the last moving soldier on the field even if you can't get to the flag. I would recommend this game to everyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great tool for developing strategy and tactics..., August 21, 2001

Stratego is one of my favorite board games because it relies completely on one's skill - no dice, cards, spinners, etc. - much like chess. The game is better at developing tactics than chess, in that much of a player's success is determined by the deployment of his or her pieces in the "planning" stage, prior to game play. Like chess, the skilled player will have to decide how best to balance offense and defense throughout the game. It's an excellent tactics teaching tool, offering deep insight into a player's ability and execution skills. As the pieces are hidden, a certain amount of bluffing and memory is involved. Great game of skill and cunning....

Stratego is a war game, but involves hidden ranks, unlike most others. The goal is to get the flag. Both players set up their army of 40 pieces, hidden from their opponent's view. Players move, battles being one by the higher ranking man. There are bombs, which can only be diffused by miners. Spies can defeat marshalls. There are 12 ranks / things in all. The set up allows for several strategies. You can create a decoy flag, put your higher ranking men in front, whatever. This game is unpredictable because of the various strategies and easy to learn. I suggest this for anyone who likes strategy board games.

5.0 out of 5 stars Arguably one of the best board games of all time..., July 23, 2001

Over the years, my love for games has changed considerably. As a young child, I loved to play Uncle Wiggely or Candyland. As I got older I began to play such classics as Monopoly, Risk, and Stratego. Of all three, I'd have to say that Stratego is my favorite. Of the three, Stratego really has no major, underlying theme, such as the Capitalism and Greed of Monopoly, or the Imperialism and Domination of Risk. However, Stratego is definitely the most fun of the three. Stratego brings in that element of strategy that Monoply doesn't have, and that Risk uses to too many extremes. Stratego isn't a game that's going to bring up verbal threats between friends like the other two games will. Rather, Stratego is more like Chess. You have to be calculating and calm never taking off your "poker face" for more then a minute. Stratego is also a game that requires a very quick mind. You have to make sure you're moving the right piece, and you have to make sure that you've set up your pieces well enough so that your opponent cannot capture your flag.

You may have noticed that I only gave this version of Stratego 4 stars in the durability category. The reason for that is the fact that this new version has stickers that you must put on the pieces in order to identify them. This is fine, and it looks alot nicer then the original; however, over time these stickers begin to peel off, and it becomes much harder to mark the new ones without making them look stupid by using a Sharpie pen to mark on it with a number. A quick word to any players used to playing the original version. The new version uses the number system backwards; that is, while the highest number used to be the weakest piece (the scout), now the highest number represents the strongest piece (the Field Marshall.) Rating: 5 Stars

This game was a huge dissapointment after playing the classic as a kid. The games require some assembly and the rules are reversed (highest number is highest rank as opposed to number 1 being the highest in the previous version). All I see see that has improved in this version is Milton Bradley's profit. This is Stratego Deluxe - not the original Stratego.

Stratego is awesome! I think it will be around for a very long time. The object is to capture your opponent's flag or kill all of your opponent's people. The hard plastic pieces are very durable, but the stickers on them aren't. This game teaches strategy and careful thinking. Stratego requires more strategy then chess, risk, etc. It requires good memory and planning also . Games can last from only a few minutes to about half an hour.
I truly think Stratego is the best strategy game ever.
