Ignore all the bad reviews. The toy has a switch in the back by the batteries. When you receive the toy it is in demo mode- loud as it is intended to be heard over the noise of screaming children in a store. Take it out of demo mode into play for quieter play or turn it to glow only for quiet crib play. It is clearly an improvement over the old model as it is easy to squeeze and you have the option of music!

I bought this toy for my one year old niece. We were looking for toys to help her learn to comfort herself and go back to sleep on her own. We were hoping for a toy that played soft, soothing music and gently glowed. However, that is not what this toy does. The "songs" are so loud they can be heard over all noise in a busy room (tv, talking, ringing phone, etc.) and in a quiet room it was so loud the noise made ME jump. Also, the toy is very heavy and the hard plastic center that houses the music device can be felt easily through the padding. My glowworm did not come with a book, either, even though the picture indicated it did. I have written Hasbro about the quality of this product and I hope that if you want a nap time or bedtime toy for your child you will buy the vintage version instead. Some things don't need "improving".

I've been reading people's reviews of this toy, and a lot of people don't seem to realize that there is a switch on the inside of it... When you take it home, it is in DEMO mode.. which is why it only plays the first part of the song, and also why it is so loud. Switch it to PLAY mode and it will not only be quieter, but will also play the whole song. You can also switch it to glow only. I hope this review helps. My 2 year old son loves his gloworm!

My son got this when he was 5 months old and he loved to put his face up to it when it was lit up in his crib. I am very thankful for the switch inside the worm that makes him louder or quieter and long or short songs. He's now 19 months and still finds his glow worm and hugs him and dances with him when he's getting sleepy. I had one as a kid so I love that he has one too.

My daughter loves this toy. She has to have her gloworm sing her a song everynight, and loves to cuddle him while she winds down. A note to the previous reviewer - take the gloworm off of "Demo" mode (you have to take out the battery pack inside the gloworm), and you will get longer songs and lights.

Many customers/reviewers are mistaken by giving this toy a bad review. Customers are complaining that the music can't be turned off for a quiet night of sleep. Those reviews made me almost not buy the toy for my daughter who really, really wanted it. I decided to go ahead (since it was a relatively inexpensive toy and she wanted it so bad). I'm glad I did, because after taking it out of the box and inspecting it, I discovered there is a mode setting which allows you to choose between three settings - the demo (which is what you hear in the store - short version), a light & music mode which stays on longer, or a light only mode. What a relief to find that. All I had to do was move the button to the light only mode and now she has the perfect little night-lite whenever she needs it. Playskool was thinking ahead, customers need to give them more credit and use their own brains as well.

My son LOVES his Gloworm! His glowing face and music are a comfort to my son, who is in the process of getting used to sleeping alone in his own room. When he feels frightened, he just gently squeezes his Gloworm! Well worth the ten bucks!

Also, a note to parents of disabled, and/or hearing or visually impaired children: the music is soothing lullabies that are loud and clear for those who are hearing impaired, the glowing face can be seen well by my son, who only responds visually to lights, and the Gloworm is easy to activate with barely any pressure for those who are physically disabled! This is, by far, my son's favorite toy from Santa! We bought countless other toys, including several switches and adapted toys, and the Gloworm won-out over all of them!

We bought this for my 10 month old daughter because with the winter upon us it is now dark outside when we pick her up from daycare. She was miserable in the car in the dark until we bought her the glow worm. Now she plays with it for the 1/2 hour drive and keeps quiet! Truly one of the best things we have purchased!!!

When I first took this toy out of the package for my 3 month old son, I thought it was loud and was disappointed that it didn't play/light up very long. BUT, then I read the instructions!!! BE SURE TO SWITCH YOUR GLOWORM TO "PLAY" MODE!!! It is shipped in "demo" mode to allow a customer to get an idea of how it works. Once you switch it to "play" mode, it gets a big quieter and it lights up and plays a full lullaby. Also, it's nice that you can choose "light" mode if you don't want any music. It's a cute toy but my son likes his Ocean Wonders Aquarium better for going to sleep...he likes to look at this when he's ready to play!! One thing that I wish it had was a volume control...maybe just "high" and "low" because it is a tad bit loud for nighttime use.

I bought this gloworm twice! The first was for a grandchild...my daughter was thrilled when we found it in Amazon, for she had one herself, as a child. I purchased a gloworm for newborns. It plays several cute songs, is cuddly, colorful and glows happily! I purchased a second gloworm to take along to a recent baby shower! It was hit! Mother to be was thrilled!
