A horse worth the money,
This review is from: FurReal Friends Butterscotch Pony (Toy)
We bought this for the upcoming christmas for my daughter who is five, we put it together today and tested it out. All sensors function properly and it definatly sounds like a real horse. You can here some of the motor movement, but the cute factor overpowers it. She even makes carrot crunching noises when you feed her, she responds to your voice as well. The assembly was a little tricky, however the instructions were nice and clear. The one problem I am having is once you zip the zipper and click it into place, getting it undone has become a problem (still currently working on it). So if you are buying, just make sure everything is nice and tight (you'll understand why when you read the instructions) before you zip the head to the body. It requires 6D batteries and I must say the on off switch is epecially nice and easy to get to as is the battery case. Overall I think it is worth the money, I know my daughter is going to love it. This is also predicted to be a hot toy of the season so if you can buy it the sooner the better. Happy Holidays.

Very charming and lifelike,

Although motor and gear noises can be heard from time to time, this is a very lifelike toy. Assembly took under 10 minutes; I like the package warning not to let children see this toy unassembled, ie. headless. Our pony was purchased for a school auction/fund raiser. Both adults and children have been charmed and somewhat taken aback by the advanced robotics. Children up to 80 lbs. can "ride" this toy. Although it seems marketed toward girls, any animal/horse loving child will want this toy. I'm going to be sad seeing it go to a new owner.

Santa got all the credit,

I was a little concerned about buying this for my daughter, since she has been around real horses recently and spent time at a pony camp last summer. I thought she might not be impressed by a motorized pony. I was completely wrong - she absolutely loves this toy and has played with it non-stop since Christmas morning. I realize now that I should have given her this pony rather than let Santa deliver it; all I heard Christmas day was how great Santa is.
My only complaint is that while the cloth around the neck zips to to the body of the pony in a secure manner, the fabric is very loose right around the pony's neck, and you can easily feel the structural support for the pony's head. I can understand that this was done to minimize resistance on the motor and make the head more mobile, but unfortunately little girls like to hug ponies right around the neck, and I would think that this spoils the illusion a bit. It doesn't seem to bother my daughter, though. I compare the value of this toy to the Barbie motorized Jeep my daughter got for her 6th birthday. They cost about the same, but in the few days since Christmas, the pony has already been played with more than the Jeep has been in two years My one fear is that the pony will not prove to be durable, but so far I have no indication that it is anything other than a great toy.

We just bought this pony for our daughter and she loves it. Many places are selling it for much more than normal retail price because they are hard to find but we found one for $250. It is pretty expensive but much cheaper than a real pony and no mess. For the money I have to say my daughter has enjoyed her jeep much better. The pony was very easy to put together (10 minutes). You do have to turn the pony off or the batteries will run down. Our daughter liked the fact that she could sit on it. You need a-lot of space to buy this pony. The motor is very loud.

Butterscotch Pony,
This review is from: FurReal Friends Butterscotch Pony (Toy)
I purchased this for my daughter for christmas. It is assembly required and took about 10 to 15 minutes to put together and install batteries. Once together it will not fit back in original box. Only negative response is you can hear the motor sounds as the Pony moves but it's so adorable and lifelike you can overlook that.

I wasn't going to write a review for this because others have said most of what I would say, but then I read a comment attached to another persons review and it made me want to say a few things. My 4 year old son recieved this pony for Christmas from my mother (his grandmother). He saw it in a Hasbro catalogue and then later in the store and really wanted it. He REALLY likes horses and has no fear of them at all. We have been taking him to the local stable so he can feed them and pet them but they said he has to be atleast 7 before he can take lessons (because of insurance). We decided this pony would be a great way to keep his interest going until he can ride them for real. Yes, it is expensive, I will be the first to say that, but something can be expensive and still be worth it. This was worth it for our son. We thought for a second and realized that two sessions of riding lessons when our son gets old enough will probably cover the cost of this pony. When put into perspective the cost wasn't really an issue for us. My mom purchased it but my husband and I would have if she hadn't beat us to it. Plus, to make this pony as lifelike as it is, it had to take a lot of engineering and design, which means more money. The thing is amazing. I find myself sitting there petting it without really realizing what I am doing. You really feel like it is a real pony. It swings it's head around to you when you call it or walk up to it. It shakes it's head just like a real horse and flicks it's tail and ears.
To address some of the negatives I have read so far. Yes, you do hear a motor noise, but it has never taken away from the experience of the toy. My son hasn't even asked why it makes that noise and he knows that pony's don't sound like that. I think he just accepts that those sounds are how it makes it work. It isn't "annoying and it doesn't distract from the fantasy of it being a real pony" (someone wrote that on a comment to another reviewer) My son has enough imagination, as most kids do, to not be bothered by a little bit of motor noise. I think the adults are the ones that are bothered by stuff like that. The space issue could be a problem if you didn't have room, but you know how big the horse is before you buy it, that shouldn't be a shocking thing. We are kind of tight on space at the moment but I am just reorganizing a little bit more to find the room for the pony. All in all I am extremely happy that our son has this. I think it will encourage his love of horses even more and teach him a little bit about taking care of them too. I purchased a blanket for the pony from someone on Ebay before Christmas and it has just made it even more real for our son. He puts the pony's blanket on before he rides her, just like a real horse. He loves the riding function and he can make it "walk" on his own. He sits on the pony over and over again throughout the day. He wanted us to take the pony upstairs to his room when he goes to sleep but we had to tell him that she sleeps downstairs, sort of like real horses sleep in barns. I think Hasbro has done a great job with this product and I really think my kids will be using it for years.

OMG! Horse crazy gal in love!,

My 6 yo is a horse fanatic and can not get enough of Butterscotch. Pricey, yes, which made us think twice about purchasing this. But we have no regrets. It whinnys and moves to sounds and touch. It "eats" when you put the included carrot (or anything) in it's mouth. It moves it's head up and down and clip clops when you ride it. It has an "sleep" mode when not in use. It truly feels real sometimes. Butterscotch is a very popular toy in our house.

Our 7 year old daughter recieved Butterscotch from Santa Christmas 2006. Now its almost a year later, and she still loves her. We have great video of "The bestest christmas ever!" She still plays with Butterscotch, and brushes her hair and body, and our now 15 month old adores Butterscotch as well. They will both sit and "ride" her together with the clip-clop sounds. Wonderful bonding times with the two of them. Butterscotch is still in great condition, and with our daughter to be born this Thanksgiving I think we will get a lot of wear out of this toy, and it really is well worth the 250 price tag for a toy that will last thru my three children. Also you can buy blankets, saddles and bridles made by people on ebay, to make it special for each child, and it really helps keep the back hair pretty, since all the "riding' can fuzz the hair on the back.

Our kids love Butterscotch,
By Laura (Pittsburgh PA) - See all my reviews

We struggled with the price of Butterscotch, but the pony has brought many, many hours of fun at our house and our 7 and 8 year olds love to play with it. Our children don't sit on it, but they put dress up hats, ponchos and scarves and make up plays in which Butterscotch performs rather well. The sounds are fun and the head movement really makes it interesting. The directions for assembly are clear and it was easy to do. There is an abundance of caution expressed about the assembly, but it really is easy.

"You may wish to not open the box around your children if they may be frightened by a box with a decapitated horse inside."
Isn't that all you need to know? I wish more products carried this disclaimer. I haven't laughed that hard in a long time. |
