Very good, but not without flaws.,

This review is from: Transformers Cybertron Voyager Soundwave (Toy)
I bought this toy a while ago when I got back into collecting Transformers toys. Soundwave was always such a cool character I just had to get this one when I saw it.
Unlike the original Soundwave, this one turns into some kind of stealth jet that looks pretty good in vehicle mode. It is alien enough not to look like a robot crammed into a semblance of a vehicle like some of the more recent transformers. In vehicle mode the only real downside is that he head kinda hangs from the bottom, and if visible if you look. Weapons that turn into bombs is a kind of neat, but weird idea. The original soundwave had weapons that transformerd into batteries, so I guess the designers are just trying to keep that spirit. Call them fuel pods (which makes more sense) if you want. In robot mode this toy is a very good homage to the original Soundwave. If you took the wings away they would look very similar. This Soundwave's chest opens to reveal a bomb that turns into an updated (and cooler looking) version of LaserBeak. LaserBeak can clip to Soundwave's arms or to the tips if his wings, whichis pretty cool. The face is also very similar to the original Soundwave. They are not exactly the same, but it is very obvious they are meant to the same character. Now to the downsides. This toy has one of the most difficult transformations to complete out of any of the Cybertron series of Transformers. It is very difficult to fold the arms together (they go under the cockpit) in such a way that the cockpit doesn't "sit up" as in, not atach correctly to the airplane. Also, Soundwave's feet are the nose of the plane but it is very hard to get them onto the pegs that hold them in place. The whole setup, of how you flip the legs around and then rotate them into the nosecone (part of which is on the forearm of the robot) is not very intuitive, and it can take some practice to get it right. There are a little tabs on the waist that are supposed to connect to the body of the plane to hold the legs in place and they rarely seat correctly. And there is the aformentioned visible head in vehicle mode. Its not a major issue and most people probably don't care, but it bothers mea little. Also someone mentioned that Laserbeak is not a true Mini-con and this is true. He is a small robot that turns into something else, but he can only really hook up to Soundwave (or Soundblaster). But that is the way it is supposed to be so it doesn't really bother me. The positives far outweigh the negatives for this toy, so if you like Transformers, this is definitely a must-have toy!

I bought this at Target yesterday, and ended up somewhat disappointed. The transformation is a bit awkward, and things don't always snap into place very well, so it's hard to tell when you've got it right. In particular it's hard to get the legs in place when going back to plane mode.
Contrary to what it says on the box, Laserbeak is *not* a Mini-Con. There is no Mini-Con logo, and no standard peg-in-a-hole for attaching to larger robots. Part of the reason I bought this was because I like Mini-Cons, so this was a disappointment. (The catalog sheet, which mentions other Mini-Cons, doesn't make this claim) That said, there are some good ideas behind the design. The translation from tape player to bomber I think makes sense, especially for those who don't like the idea of shrinking transformers. Instead of transforming batteries and cassettes, there are bombs. But on the other hand, why would Soundwave use his guns as bombs? Then his guns would be gone. So all in all, I wouldn't recommend this one, and absolutely not at jacked-up "used & new" prices.

Soundwave returns with a new look and an upgrade in appearence and weapons. His vehicle mode is a sweet futuristic jet fighter bomber mode, but still keeps some of the G1 features all transformer fans love like his trusted companion laserbeak and his chest being the weapon storage area for laserbeak or his weapons. The cyberplanet key actually opens the chest in case you are wondering what its function is.Soundwave has two guns which actually transform into bombs for use in his bomber mode. One gun is a harmonic wave cannon while the other is a subsonic shocker blaster. This gives Soundwave more firepower in robot mode as well. The transformation level is intermediate meaning if you have experience with transformers there is minor difficulty. If you are a parent buying for a child of 5-6 or younger they might need a little help in the process. The trickiest part is getting Soundwaves legs just right when going from robot to vehicle. His legs flip up to form the nosecone of the vehicle with his arms being stored in the middle of the bomber mode underneath. With some practice and patience though it is generally easy to figure out.The detail is outstanding overall with laserbeak being able to sit on Soundwaves hand or wing.He also still has the classic shoulder cannon(subsonic shocker)in robot mode as well. The durability is an A++ for acting out whatever battle scenes come to mind. The poseability is very good as well.If you are a transformer fan or Soundwave fan this is a must have that you will treasure forever.Bottom line Soundwave is a high quality,well-made,10 out of 10 figure all transformer fans should have in their collection. This is 100% one of the best cybertron series figures that was done.I highly recommend Cybertron Soundwave to all transformer fans out there.Transformers Rule!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
