The Decepticon Air Commander Returns,
This review is from: Transformers Deluxe Classic Starscream (Toy)
My first ever Transformer was Starscream (Christmas 1984). I am pleased to say that this Starscream is a nice homage. In robot mode Starscream has some stability issues, but the legs have nice posibility. The main problems with robot mode is that there is no good way to place the wings so they don't interfere in his robot mode, and the airplane tip could have been hidden better.
In jet mode Starscream looks just like an actual F-15, which was the same jet that the original Starscream was based on. My only complaints is that the figure could use some better coloring, and there should have been landing wheels on the bottom. An opening cockpit like the original would have worked wonders. His "null cannons" can be posted on his arms, like the original toy, or can be put in his fists like regular guns while in robot mode. The cannons attach to the underside of the wings. The missles can launch 3-4 feet away, but need to stay on to look like the original. The transformation can be begun from several locations, and is of perfect compelxity, and homages to the original's transformations. All in all, recommended.

Better than the Original,
By
This review is from: Transformers Deluxe Classic Starscream (Toy)
This Starscream toy is so much better than the original that there is no comaparison. The jet mode, which is how the figure comes boxed is a very convincing toy jet, unlike some of the more recent transformers figures which only resemble vehicles because they have wheels or wings.
Robot mode is where this toy really stands out, even over the Optimus Prime and Megatron in the same toy series. This version of Starscream is almost a perfect match for the character in the original generation 1 cartoon series. Its amazing ans a shame the other toys in this line are not as close to their animated counterparts. In robot mode the figure is pretty poseable, the legs have a nice range of movement, as do the arms. the head is a little hard to move because of the air intakes, but it is good enough. The only thing I really have to nitpick about it the length of the arm cannons. They go too far back (up over the shoulder) so that in order for the guns to point straight out you need to bend down the wings. Another thing that is strange, why the need for firing missiles? In the cartoon they are not missiles, but laser guns. Optimus Prime doesn't have a firing weapon, why does starscream need one? If the guns didn't need room for springs they could have been made to fit the arms closer negating the need to move the wings to have the gun point forward. Not a huge deal, but a little annoying nonetheless and a strange oversight for an otherwise increadible Transformer.

Starscream is "flying" off the shelves and for good reason,

This review is from: Transformers Deluxe Classic Starscream (Toy)
On Tuesday, I was at a local Walmart and saw a full display of the new Transformers Classic line. They had a bunch of both the Deluxe class ($9.99 figures that include Rodimus, Starscream, Bumblebee and Astrotrain) and Voyager class ($19.99 figures of Optimus Prime and Megatron)
On Saturday night, I bought the last 2 Deluxe figures they had. From what I've heard, these figures have been flying off shelves everywhere. From my viewpoint, it's with good reason. They've brought us classic characters at a reasonable price and all the figures I have seen so far are very well done. Starscream is no exception. If you've only seen this one on the shelf, it doesn't do it true justice. The jet mode (which is how it is packaged) is okay, but some of the coloring on it is a bit different from what a classic Transformers fan would be used to. The red and blues are a bit mixed up, but it's close enough. The robot mode is what really makes this figure shine. One look and I was feeling more than a little nostalgic. In a lot of ways. this figure looks much more like the cartoon and comic character than any figure ever has before. The poseability is very good, about the only thing that it lacks is the ability to bend at the knees but compare it to a 1984 version and it's head and shoulders above. The transformation also is pretty smooth once you get used to it. Finally, one really nice thing is there aren't a lot of parts to lose on this one, again especially compared to the 1984 version. Now if you're not an old Transformers fan, and just want a cool toy to buy your kids, it fits that role well, also. In fact, it displays very nicely alongside the jets from the Cybertron series. Plus, I always thought fighter jets made for some of the nicest Transformers molds. I've reviewed some of the other Transformers Classics line if you'd like to take a look.
