Tonka Toughest Mighty Crane

It's big, apparently tough for outdoor play, but for a nearly 3 year old, very limited in what can be done with it. Even as an adult, I found that the crane mechanism was difficult to manipulate and the hook system was impractical to use for anything. Ours came with a bunch of heavy paper construction blocks you put together, intended to use with the crane hook, but they don't fit on it, so they're useless. Plastic tabs are on some of them to insert the hook rail in to, but even that isn't very functional. Crane winding knob is too difficult for small child also. With only 3 big Tonkas available now for kids to play with outside, this is a big disappointment in the set. Only the Mighty Dump Truck is really a good toy for kids, as even the loader has little going for it. Crane is definitely the worst, though. Not the Tonkas of my youth, that's for sure!

i bought this crane for a 5 yrs old boy for xmas, but i think i will return it. there is a knob that you twist that raises and lowers the crane. well it does raise the crane, but does not lower it. there is not enough tension/weight to the hook part for this to work. what i had to do is turn the knob a few times and then pull the crane hook thing out manually, and even this did not work too well. i think a kid could indeed figure out how to do something with this toy, but can't reccomend it.

My 3 yr old son likes this only because of its big wheels and because he can put stuff (other toys and small cars) into the bed. Like other reviewers said, the crane doesn't work very well and the piece that is supposed to hold cars or whatever you pick up comes off very easily. He's basically using it like a dump truck...he had wanted a crane though!

I almost think we got a different product than the other reviews. My son loves this crane, hooks stuff up, fills it up,& hauls his loads around to his various "job sites" to dump. Also makes a fun addition to the loader and dump truck (also from the Tonka Toughest line).
We have Tonkas of every shape and size and we have not been disappointed at all. Highly recommend.

UPDATE: OK, it's been two years since I wrote the review, and this cool crane truck is still holding its own. Of course, it's Tonka Tough, so why not, but with heavy use from lots of energetic kids, it's held up wonderfully. Tons of fun, as we've found all the Tonka toys to be. Hope you enjoy it, too!

I bought this for my son despite bad reviews. He loves it!! He plays with it everyday and it still works great. The truck is big and he can crane lift toy airplanes into the back bed. The truck bed also has dump truck action. My son is 3 1/2 years old and likes constuction toys and this was a great purchase for him.

A Great Addition to the Mighty Dump Truck and the Mighty Loader. Indoor/outdoor, camping, whatever. If your child is into trucks ...they hold up.

I was *so* excited about giving this to my nephew, but as the previous posts described, this toy is of VERY poor quality.

Ditto what was said about the lack of tension in the cord -- temper tantrum #1.

Ditto what was said about the horribly designed claw -- temper tantrum #2. (Was it designed by a committee? Its necessary complexity and flimsy construction destroyed any chance to have fun.)

This disaster has completely turned me off Tonka products. Sad.

I bought the crane for xmas for my 2 year old. He likes it but I don't think its functional. Part of the scoop broke off the first day! And you really can't do anything with it. He rolls it around which is fine but it can't hook up or drag anything. He does like the cool noise that the crane makes when you wind the string up. I bought the crane to add to his dump truck and payloader, but if your only going to buy one I don't recommend this one. The dump truck hauls way more and the payloader also doubles as a ride on toy or at least for my 2 year old it does.

Super durable plastic, and much bigger than I thought!

What a great price.

My 18 month child absolutely loves it. He can even sit on the back and propel himself forward. It's very strong and sturdy, he weighs about 25 pounds. This is a must buy, we recommend it.
