Tonka Toughs Trencher/Backhoe

We are buying this toy because we have had our neighbor's toy at our house for the past 5 weeks while searching desperately for another. To say that my son loves his backhoe would not be enough. He needs to lie it on the ground by his crib before sleeping, he brings it in the backpack with him on walks (not comfy for me!), he brings it shopping with us, and, of course, uses it non-stop in the sandbox. Over the past 5 weeks with this VERY durable toy, he has learned to master the levers and increase his fine-motor skills. I recommed this toy to anyone with a child over 15 months.

My son Carter is having a hard time working the levers that move the trencher and especially the backhoe but will grow into it. It's a little frustrating now. This is a well made product and very sturdy and durable, and for all the maltreatment it's received, it has not rusted or cracked in any metal or plastic parts.

Somehow we have avoided letting our little guy take this to the shops or to the playpark - but that's about the only time day or night he can bear to be parted from it. A real hit for any little truck enthusiast.

My son has this toy, we got if for him when he was 2, and at 3 he hardly plays with it anymore. He much prefers the Mighty Tonka construction toys.

But, If your child likes construction stuff, they'll probably like this toy for digging with all their others. But, I have to warn you, I really do not like the crawler trax. They inhibit the movement along the ground, and keep falling off. I have to put them back on all the time, and that frustrates my son...and me! The bulldozer in this group does the SAME thing. We just keep the tracks off of both and it rolls fine.

I also cannot stand that the stickers fade if left outside in the sandbox at all, you have to bring them in each day when done or the stickers fade and make the item look crappy. This is true for all the Tonka construction vehicles. We used to bring them all in, and one night we forgot. These things are played with outdoors all the time, you'd think they could figure out a way to keep the decals from looking so bad. So, be sure you bring your toy inside each night to keep it looking nice...if you care.
Just a note, this (and the bulldozer) are much smaller than the Mighty Tonka things that we have...I am not sure why they make this so small and not a "Mighty", but they do.
