5.0 out of 5 stars Great Addition to the Heroscape Line, September 22, 2007
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Hasbro Heroscape Marvel Game Set (Toy)
I've become a big fan of Heroscape over the past few years, and I'm consistently impressed by the quality of the product, as well as the creative new additions to the line. Heroscape is billed as a "Build and Battle" game system - it consists of many kinds of interlocking plastic tiles of varying sizes representing different kinds of terrain. Figures representing heroes and squads from different eras and different genres (sci-fi, fantasy, horror, action movies, etc.) do battle on this terrain in a game that is both extremely fun and very easy to learn (and get sucked into). Heroscape: Marvel is the latest additon to this ever-expanding miniatures game, and is a worthy addition at that.

Heroscape: Marvel includes everything you'll need to play a Heroscape game right out of the box: terrain (representing grass, asphault, and concrete), a two-story ruin, dice, numerous kinds of markers, 10 Marvel Comics pre-painted figures (very nicely done and very sturdy), and 10 game cards outlining what powers each figure has. The game is also accompanied by an illustrated full-color, detailed and easy-to-learn rulebook. The 10 playable characters in the game are: Spider-Man, Captain America, Silver Surfer, Iron Man, The Hulk, Thanos, Red Skull, Venom, Dr. Doom, and The Abomination.

As an avid Heroscape player, I have to say that this is one of the most ingenious expansions of the game thus far - adding in the Marvel characters will add a whole new dimension to the game - although, beware: the included figures look exceptionally powerful. This game is completely integrated into the pre-existing Heroscape format, so if you already have Heroscape sets, you'll be able to bring this set in seemlessly. If you're completely new to the game, this is a perfect place to start. You'll be amazed by the quality and the hours of fun that Heroscape will bring to people of all ages. Highly recommended; designed for children 8 and up.

My son already had the original Heroscape set,but he loves Marvel superheroes, so when we saw this, we just had to get it for him.It can be used seperately, or put together with the original, for extremely expanded play. The pieces are sturdy, and durable, the set up is amazing, and the characters really look like the superheroes and villains they're supposed to be.My son absolutely loves it.As a matter of fact, I think it was his favorite gift this Yule.

The Marvel Set does not intergrate well with the other sets. The heroes in Marvel are more powerful and have a much higher point value. My fellow gamers and I like to combine all our characters when we play games. We do not use the Marvel characters because they just don't fit in with the rest.

I've never played Heroscape before, but this Marvel addition looked like something fun that was a collectible must-have. And I do NOT regret buying it! All of the qualities are a great build-up to the game overall:
-The 10 figures are small enough to fit on a space on the battle board, yet so detailed. The detail is so specific and all of the features match those of the real (although fictional, I'm pretty sure we have an idea of what heroes and villains look like) characters. I couldn't imagine them being any more realistic and all of the characters have an equal amount of detail put into them. I was surprised, because I knew they were so small but I didn't know it was possible for them to have so many additional lines and bumps carved into them. I almost want to put them on display, but I keep them in the box anyway, so they can stay in good condition/won't get lost until I want to play again. It's like buying everything in the set and getting ten extremely cool action figures free with the purchase.
-The terrain pieces are built so that they can connect to any other terrain pieces, grass, cement, or rock. The pieces are very sturdy and I haven't had any problems with them snapping or breaking or getting scratched/scuffed somehow. They even work good if you connect and build your battlefield on a soft surface.
-This set works as a great extension to any Heroscape set!
-It's really fun to play, it keeps you entertained for a long time, and sometimes, you can't use basic attacks so you have to get reduced to strategy. The battle lasts a while, though, so start the game when you have time.
-The breakable wall is also a cool new addition. Just hide behind the wall to surprise your opponent by breaking it or go on top of the wall to stay away from people who can't get onto the wall by jumping/gliding/flying.
Overall, this game's awesome! I would recommend it to anyone who likes board games or wants to have fun-you don't have to be a Marvel fan! Or just use it as an extension to your other Heroscape sets. Either that, or just buy it for fun-it's a good deal!

5.0 out of 5 stars Its a good time!, July 7, 2009

My girlfriend and I were bored one evening and drove to Wal-Mart to see if we could find some interesting new board game. This wasn't what we expected to find, but we thought it looked cool and decided to give it a try.

Well, the box says "Ages 8+", but this gave a couple of young college grads a good time. We set it up and were immediately impressed with the set-up of the game. You can literally do ANYTHING you want with this! We played one basic game, which is REALLY basic but good for getting the mechanics down, and immediately played with the Master rules. After getting through one "round" of play, we had to refer to the manual only twice, and that was just to make sure that we were doing it the right way! The rules are super-intuitive once you get used to it, and many will seem like second nature if you've ever played video games that are similar to this set-up.

We're excited to build our own maps and stuff as we get a little more used to the game. We felt a little geeky using a 20-sided dice, something usually found in D&D. It didn't matterThis is an incredible amount of fun, much more engrossing than Risk or Axis and Allies because the rules don't constantly get in the way of gameplay and because you can make ANY map that you want!

Before we finished playing our first game, I hopped on to Amazon and bought the Rise of the Valkyrie master set. While the characters aren't compatible, ALL of the terrain tiles are. I'm excited to do something more with this game on a larger scale, and the "Master Set" allows for that.

The only reason for a "4" on durability - the "ruin" of the warehouse in this set is supposed to fit on a track on a special terrain tile, but mine came out of the box slightly bent and won't fit. It just leaves room in my mind for future damage, though I hope not.

These games say "Ages 8 and up," but my bright five year old son loves to play, with supervision of course. Monsters that fight? And daddy wants to play too? What could be better? As with the other Heroscape games, there's not tremendous complexity in the way the pieces interact compared to other collectible games (Magic: The Gathering, for instance).

It's great for teaching simple math and probability, too. I love seeing my son calculate, in his head, whether rolling three "shields" on six dice will be easy or hard. (For the un-initiated, you roll lots of dice for each attack or defense, with each die having two "shields," three "skulls," and a blank. So three shields on six dice is unlikely.) We also get to add up three-digit numbers as we calculate the point values of one army compared to another, so he gets to learn about spending a limited resource. "You can have this one hero, or these two squads, but you can't afford both."

Comparing it to other Heroscape games, this one is deliberately overpowered. It's all heroes (in Heroscape parlance, even the villains qualify as evil heroes) and no squads, and the unit's power ratings are quite high. But so are their point values, which makes it feasible to integrate them into the army of dragons and ninjas you may have from other Heroscape sets.

I have a lot of other Heroscape sets, and the characters in this set don't seem to be very compatible with the trasitional game play. As a game by itself, I really do like it though, and I don't regret buying it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Christmas Favorite!, January 11, 2009

This review is from: Hasbro Heroscape Marvel Game Set (Toy)
Ok this toy is for 8 year olds and my son is only 4 but he's obsessed with little figures-I mean obsessed. He opened this up on Christmas and didn't care if he opened another toy all day. He has played with it every single day since. He obviously doesn't follow the rules and I took out all the small pieces so what he's left with is age appropriate. I can't say enough about this toy. The funny thing is, he saw this on my computer screen and wanted it because the Hulk was on it and it was on sale so I said " What the heck?" Boy am I glad I ordered it!

I have played this game with my 9 year old daughter, my 26 year old girlfriend, a 25 year old friend, and a 38 year old friend. They all enjoyed it.

The advanced rules were easy for everyone to grasp without any difficulty. Heroscape is a great game and the Marvel expansion is fun for those comic book fans. Looking forward to the reinforcements.
