I bought this with fond memories of my childhood lightbright. I honestly thought my 5 year old son would love this.
First, it's really cheaply made. Thin plastic junk, typical of the toys coming out today. The drawer is convenient, but sticks. Almost every time we've opened, pegs have gone flying everywhere because of the difficulty in opening the drawer. It is battery operated. You press the button and it automatically shuts off after 3 minutes. I'd prefer the electric type to this. It doesn't stand up well, if at all. You can't push a peg in without holding it or propping it against something. It's just not the toy I remember. I wouldn't buy this again and I definitely would not give this as a gift.

My 3 1/2 year old daughter loves playing with her lite brite. I have to say when she received it as a gift I cringed. I didn't think it had any educational value and the small pieces were going to get all over the house.
After watching her play with it, I have to say it enhances her fine motor skills when she has to pick up the small pegs and place them in the small holes, it also helps her identify letters and each colors initials i.e., p = purple, w = white, etc....all while creating a fun picture. I'm going to get a few for gifts.

The working surface area on this unit is smaller than the original Lite Brite, but its compact size is probably more convenient for little hands and attention spans.
This newer model also features some improvements over the old classic including a drawer for the pegs, and the colored pegs joined into units of two, three and four pegs making for faster plugging and easier handling (see Customer Images). Can a multi-colored array of pegs offered in the format be far behnd? This version of the Lite Brite line does not have the same impact as the original (which is not for sale on Amazon), and the battery-powered light, while low in glare, is not nearly as long-lasting or strong. My thoughts for Hasbro: 1. Make more theme sheets such as the examples pictured in Customer Images (Customer Images under the item picture); 2. Make mutli-colored joined pegs; and 3. Distribute the lighting more evenly behind the working area; both the old and the new models capture all the light in the center of the frame. But for under ten bucks, it's still one of the most engaging solitary games on the market.

Huge Improvement over the old style,

My 3 1/2 year old daughter received this as a Christmas gift and she loves it. The light only stays on when she needs it on, there is a storage drawer for the pegs and it runs on batteries. It's also flat so it takes up very little space.
My older children had the older model which had no storage drawer (and didn't fit back in the box once assembled), came with no light bulb and had such a short electrical cord the kids had to sit on the floor near an outlet to play with it. They never ended up playing with it, so I got rid of it. This one is so much better! The only improvement to make so this toy is truly self contained would be to add a pocket for the pattern sheets. Love it and would highly recommend it -- Just don't forget to buy the batteries with it!

This is NOT anywhere near as good as the Lite Brite I remember from childhood. Generally companies aim to improve thier products over time, but apparently Hasbro is only concerned with selling refill packs so that the poor child who gets stuck with this piece of junk can play with it more than 10 times. Gee, thanks. Now for an additional [...] my kid can enjoy his toy an additional 15 times. Real generous Hasbro. That's right -- the "flat screen" is really only black pieces of paper that you attach to the screen with the pegs, and once you've put a peg through the paper you cannot remove it without leaving a big, white hole. This leaves no room for error or change, something that was really frustrating for my son -- so much so that halfway through his first picture he asked if we could take it back to the store. Also, there's no "On/Off" switch. You turn it on by pressing a button, then 3 minutes later it turns off on it's own. How stupid is that? And the little compartment at the bottom that is used to store the pegs is IMPOSSIBLE to open. There is no way a child could get it open -- which could have been done on purpose, so that younger siblings don't get into and snack on the pegs -- but every time my husband or I manage to pry the thing open the pegs fly everywhere. Not cool. You'd think they could have come up with a better baby-proofing solution than that. I can't seem to find any of the classic style Lite Brites, so I may try to take the thing apart and paint the background black -- I figure I couldn't possibly make the thing more useless. Trust me: don't waste your money or ruin any of those great memories you may have of playing with a fun and functional Lite Brite as a child. "New and Impoved" couldn't be more wrong in this case.

We requested the Lite Brite as a birthday gift for my 5 year old daughter not knowing about its redesign. She loves playing with it, so we're happy about that.
But I have issues with the redesign. 1) The screen doesn't always stay standing when putting in the pegs. 2) There is no way to turn off the light. It is on a timer and you have to wait for it to time itself out and turn off. I imagine this means the bulb/battery will burn out sooner than if it was still plug in or had an on/off switch. 3) The patterns are not reuseable. 4) BUT my BIGGEST ISSUE is with the container that holds the pegs. It sticks so pretty much every time you have to open it, it pops open and all of the pegs fall out. After about 10 times of doing this, I'm ready to throw the whole thing in the trash. Overall I would not recommend this toy.

I was so excited when I saw the lite brite in the store and immediately bought it for my 3.5 year old. When I got it home and got the batteries in, I was very disappointed. With the lite brite I had growing up, the peg grid was black, so if you didn't have the picture sheets, you could USE YOUR IMAGINATION and create YOUR OWN designs. However, the new lite brite has a white peg grid which you must use with the several picture sheets and two blank black sheets with white dotes or letters to show you where to poke the holes. The holes on the paper DO NOT line up with the actual holes in the gird. When my daughter uses up all of the picture sheets, I plan on using black construction paper to do the job. I also plan on calling my mother and asking if she still has my lite brite from childhood. The only redeeming factor of this toy is that my daughter loves it, despite all its flaws.

Not the Lite Brite I remember...,

This is not the Lite Brite I remember. The basics are the same, but the details of this new version are very irritating. First of all, the light has no "off" button, so once you push the button that turns the light ON, it stays on for 3 minutes, whether you want it to or not. So if you like taking a quick peek to see how your creation is coming, but then turning the light off so you get that "surprise ooh ahh" moment in the end when you finally illuminate your picture, you're out of luck. The light goes on, and stays on. (Unless you remove the batteries from the back, which is hard to do without making the pegs fall out.) Also, the handy-dandy peg holder is almost impossible to open. My 3 year old can't make it budge, and I can only open it with difficulty. Bad design. Also, be sure to have 3 D batteries handy (ka-ching!) when you open this up, or your kid may be disappointed. I personally would prefer a plug. I wish these "improvements" actually improved this toy, instead of making it more frustrating!

I have such vivid memories of my Lite Bright as a child and was so excited to find one in the store for my 3 1/2 year old for Christmas.
When we opened it this morning...became very clear that it was nothing like I remembered. The sheets don't line up correctly, the drawer sticks and pegs fly everywhere (and her little hands aren't strong enough to open it herself), there aren't enough pegs of each color to finish the designs (though potentially we lost a couple when they flew across the couch when the drawer finally opened), and there is no power switch (ie..turns off after 3 minutes?) She is completely incapable of doing it by herself, which though I expected she would need some assistance, she can do none of it alone...and the kid is pretty self sufficient with most of her toys. Truly Hasbro took the cheap way out with this redesign and I certainly won't be buying it again or giving it as a gift.

As another reviewer pointed out, you cannot use this toy without one of the 10 design sheets (black background made of thick paper) included in the box. Eight of the design sheets come with a design, the other two are blank "free-form" sheets. The screen is clear so in order to create your own design you HAVE to use a new design sheet and, as I mentioned, you only have two of those. You can purchase refills but that was not what I expected from a Lite Brite. This toy is not worth the retail price, $21.90. My daughter purchased hers at a local Target for $10 and I consider that a fair price.
