"Paws Off!" if frustrating at first,

We just bought 2 of these for my daughters, ages 4 and a half and 8 and a half. First off, I wish there was more than just the dog version to choose from, but we solved the "whose is whose" problem with a Sharpie on the back. The voice recognition is pretty frustrating for kids, it took a good 20 minutes for my eight year old and I to get it to accept her voice. Make sure you pick a short, one syllable password, and like the other reviewer says, one with hard consonants in it. So far, I have been unable to get my 4 year old to say the password the same way several times in order to get the diary to accept her choice of password. She doesn't seem to mind too much though and both of them are in there happily writing in the diary and using the stickers. I hope Hasbro comes out with refill notepads and stickers soon!

my 6yr old daughter bought this for herself w/birthday money. SHE loves it. although she does get frustrated sometimes because the voice-recognition isn't so great. when choosing a password name, try to get your kids to choose one w/hard sounding letters, not soft ones. it seems to be better able to recognize names that have hard consonant sounds. (K, T, P, etc.) despite it's faults, she loves it. and since she's learning to spell more words, it IS very encouraging for that.

The commercial for this toy is great. And I bought it, against my better judgement because my 7 year old niece REALLY REALLY wanted it! Less than a dozen sheets of paper... haven't been able to find refills. The guard is cute. The password is easy to get around. Her little brother is 5 and figured out that he could make any short word open it. I would pass on this purchase if I had to do it again.

My 7 year old daughter bought this toy with money she had saved up. It seemed like it would be a great little diary. Unfortunately, the voice recognition is not great and the diary part is a little 10 cent note pad. It was quite a let down.

Well, my 6 year old was having fun with her "secret" password diary until her older brother and sister spoke into the microphone hole, and the diary opened right up..the magic was lost! She was in tears...devastated. Simple to open..anyone can speak any word, and it will open. The diary does keep her interest, and it is cute for any Pet Shop lover. Not much paper comes with this diary, but you can just cut your on paper to fit inside. This toy is definately for a younger kid...one who isn't writing sentences, as the paper is very small. My kindergartner practices her letters and numbers on the paper. The pet is removable...which is cool as well. Overall fun, for what it is, and the age group it is targeted for.

This electronic diary was a great gift for my 6 year old! The diary is voice activated and once you've recorded her voice it only opens for her voice. Several things to keep in mind: When you record her voice on the diary make sure there is absolutely no background noise or the voice will not be recorded accurately. Also when your child records her voice she must use the same inflection and pitch when she tries to open the diary as she did when she recorded it. Her older sister was able to open the diary if she used the same inflection and since their voice is similar, it opened for her too. However, it did not open for anyone else's voice. The little sheet of paper that the diary holds to write in is small but we bought an extra pad of paper(the size of small post-it-notes) to fit inside. Overall it was a cool gift and my child uses it all the time.

I bought this for my daughter for Christmas (one of the only things on her wish list!) and she loves it! There isn't much room inside for them to store anything they write unless its just a couple of pages. The biggest problem I see is that the password recognition is very sensitive. Her password begins with a "S" and anytime someone says a word with an "S" it opens even though its not the password. So apparently it recognizes the first sound. Overall she is satisfed so thats all that matters to me!

I got this toy 2 years ago for my 10th birthday. I was so excited to finally get it so I wanted to set it up immediately. It took me two hours to get it to accept my password and respond to me when I wanted to open it. Then it wouldn't close. Now don't stop reading it gets alot better. It turns out it's not the product that was bad, in other words there was just something wrong with that particular diary. So we yook it back to the store for another one and the new one worked perfectly. It's stayed working for 2 years, but I don't write in it because it only comes with 20 3x3 pieces of paper. But it's super durable. My cousin got mad that she couldn't get it open and slammed it down on wood floor, and it still works great. (It didn't open when she slammed it down either!)
I definitely recommend this toy.

My 7 yr. old loves this toy. She loves diaries, and now her sister can't get into it, and gets a "growl" if she tries! It sometimes takes a few tries to understand the spoken password, but my daughter doesn't mind. She's had it a year now, and still plays with it all the time.
