5.0 out of 5 stars Second Helping Just as Tasty, March 27, 2010
This review is from: Hashbrown Winters and the Mashimoto Madness (Paperback)
I found the first book so quirky and fun that I decided to read the sequel right away. The series is a grade-schooler's dream: crazy situations, funny dialogue, and a little bathroom humor thrown in for good measure. (Pretty tame though, in a day when children's books can be called "Captain Underpants.")

This time around Hashbrown is confronted with a rival student who has just come into a lot of money and is building a treehouse to eclipse his own. (The rival student is the "Mashimoto" from the title, in case you were wondering) The book does of a great job of building on the previous material and adding its own touches. In addition, it is quick and well-structured storytelling that I think even adults can enjoy.

If you haven't already, give this series a read. I here there is a third helping in the works...

5.0 out of 5 stars Especially enticing for 8-12 year old boys, March 20, 2010
This review is from: Hashbrown Winters and the Mashimoto Madness (Paperback)
"Hashbrown Winters and the Mashimoto Madness" is a great little chapter adventure book that stands on its own or can be enjoyed as a funny follow-up to "The Adventures of Hashbrown Winters" by the same author. A zany, patchy humor runs through all of "Hashbrown Winters" that is addictive and not only to elementary age schoolboys. This time the plot revolves around the relationship between Hashbrown and a rival treehouse founder, Hi Mashimoto. As something thickens (whether or not that might be the plot is always disgustingly debatable in a Hashbrown story), Hashbrown and Mashimoto and eccentric friends find a reason to team up and struggle to solve a bigger problem that threatens Pordunce Elementary which, by the way, is a far cry from your typical elementary school. Hashbrown flirts with a prison sentence for his crazy schemes this time, but true to form, he makes friends with the odd inmates and uses their unusual talents and skills to finish cracking his mystery. "Hashbrown Winters and the Mashimoto Madness" is a wild wonderful read especially enticing for 8-12 year old boys and others who want to be like them.

This review is from: Hashbrown Winters and the Mashimoto Madness (Paperback)
I finished the second book in the series last night and I enjoyed it more than the first. Frank set the stage in book one and broadened and deepened the Hashbrown Winters Universe in book two. I can't wait to see where he goes with book three.
